Reasonably priced Westmere-EX server?

I just priced out a DELL R810 and WOW, they sure think a lot of their Westmere-EX based systems.

I think this was the basic specs:

2x Xeon E7-2850
64GB RAM (Dual Ranked 16x4GB)
2x 10k 300GB SAS in RAID 1
Redundant PS
No OS (these will be VMWare ESX systems)

Price tag was approx. $8,700. We're going to need at least 4 of these. Our current ESX cluster is 5x approx. $5,000 DELL 2950's from 3 years ago.

So, anyone got any ideas on more reasonable pricing (hopefully without having to build it myself - not that I'm not capable, just that I don't want to try to sell that to management).

Methinks you just have sticker shock. That's a good price. If it's a quote you got from a salesman, you may be able to press for a better price. They can be quite flexible.

For comparison:
A similar 2s HP Proliant with 2 x 8c Xeons, 64GB, redundant 750W PSUs and 2 10K drives is about $15000. The models with 10c options are even more expensive.

I could post what IBM or Sun wants, but it's in the same neighborhood as the HP.

Each of those CPUs costs ~$2700 online. 64GB of trustworthy ECC memory is close to $2000 (at least). That leaves ~$1300 for the chassis, PSUs, motherboard and drives. It's possible. Oops, what about on site same/next day service? :p

You're not going to build the server cheaper than the price Dell quoted, even if that was an option. How much do you think it's worth? $3000? lol

I didn't realize that the 8c procs were that pricey per each.

And I didn't think the server _wasn't_ worth $8,700. I just didn't want there to be some cheaper option and not know about it.

I got this pricing via our "Premier" page. In the past, Premier meant "will stupidly pay the first price quoted without question", in my experience. I used to routinely go to GotApex and find deals for as much as half the price I was getting quoted on my Premier page and then call my salesman direct and make him match the price. He would usually give me some bullcrap about the fact that the "Joe Blow" deals didn't include their "Bronze" level support (which was the lowest level I could get via Premier). To which I would reply that when the Gold level support adds almost twice the cost of the system, I might as well buy another system instead and have it as cold spare. The last time I actually called Dell support was back in 1999 I think because Windows NT was bugging out in a weird way and they didn't offer jack squat to the equation (I think Microsoft Priority Support finally solved the problem).

I am having sticker shock to a certain degree but if that's what the price is for Westmere-EX level processing... so be it. We'll just go with 3 instead of 5 for now.

The Xeon E7-2830 is an 8 core Westmere-EX based processor. Stepping up to the E7-2850 10 core variation (times 2, i.e. both sockets) is a $1,135 option for me.

IOW, there are 10 core AND 8 core versions of the Westmere-EX based Xeons.
