Would cutting a hole in the back of my mobo tray and side panel behind the cpu and/or the chip set help cool either?

Unfortunately I’m afraid the answer would be depends; the most important part of cooling is proper airflow. An extra vent works well as long as you have cool air being drawn into the case.

It’s also, (at least partially), dependant on what type of cooler you have on your CPU, if it’s a tower based cooler where you can direct vent towards the back of the case, (where you just put the new blow-hole,) then it would be more effective than if you had a down-facing cooler design.

If you’re looking just to cut a hole, (not put a fan there,) it’ll likely be less effective. Maverick986, what type of case/setup do you currently have?

Probably not the answer you were looking for but I hope it helps.

the case i'm using is here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811144103

i've mod'd it some.....i have a 120mm 90cfm in the back (exhaust)..a 120mm 55cfm in the top (exhaust).. 2 80mm 66cfm in the front (intake)...i also moved my hdd up into the 5.5" bays and mod'd the front 5.5" covers and mounted a 80mm 32cfm in there (intake)....in addition to this i removed the air duct and cut a larger hole in and put a 120mm 45cfm in blowing in on my cpu hsf...my plan was to mount a 80mm over the back of the mobo where the cpu is and maybe another one over the chipset....

I'm using this case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129021 I've replaced all the, IMO "flunky", blue fans with Yate Loons (D12SM-12).

While I have no complaints with the case (lots of fans), in fact it cools my E6600 (same everything, OC' 3GHz, etc) to within about 4c of it's brother which is WC'ed (Apogee GT WB, MCP350 WP, MCR320 rad), both folding 24/7. The "air cooler" has a Zalman 9700 HSF

I was just curious if mounting a fan on the back of the mobo would be advantageous.

I have another C2D (E6420) in a Antec case also (not a 900) and if it is advantageous I would mod it. (Zalman 9700 HSF)

Yes, that's an old trick. The airspace between the MOBO and the mounting plate is dead air. One small fan should be plenty. No need to bring in outside air either. Even a thin 10x40mm fan will help.

You have another problem though.
Total exhaust 145 cfm
Total intake 209 cfm
....and you want add another 100 or so cfm intake!

ok....yea forgot to mention that those are max cfm......all but the 32cfm intake are on a controller and running at the lowest speed.....tho i dont think thats going to make that big of a difference....also didn't include my psu b4...but i don't think thats going to make that big of a dent in the airflow numbers....either way its positive and thats bad i know....would things still work if i put the fan blowing out?

airflow aside...would it cool better if the fan was blowing in or out? the fan i'm planing on using blows 26cfm

I did this a few years back on a AMD K7. I put an 60mm slim fan between the mobo tray and the side panel, blowing cool air in on the back of the CPU socket. With all the solder pins exposed on the socket it worked very well, about a 4-5c drop if I recall. I dont know how well it would work on newer stuff, but it will get all that hot dead air out from behind the board. Good luck!
