Realtime webcam

I purchased a Philips SPC9000NC, and its ok but frankly using VLC I'm finding theres an incredible amount of latency (I'd guess between .2 - .4 seconds) just watching it locally. Is this just my webcam? Will most USB webcams be like this?

Would things be any better if I buy a firewire card and firewire webcam?

Nearly every usb webcam will be like that.

A firewire webcam will be much better but much more expensive.

I suspected that was likely the case.

Anyone know of a good site for webcam comparison? I'm happy to go USB, but I noticed that my current Philips has rather poor sensitivity. For a cam thats built for 90 fps, I simply dont understand how that can be.
