realtek audio to receiver?

so i have an abit AI7 mobo with the 6 channel realtek ac97 audio and it has 5 1/8th inch minijacks on the back of the mobo that supposedly would go to the speakers.. well i was wondering if i should buy a home theater receiver that would have direct input and then buy the appropriate amount of radioshack y-cables with an 1/8th inch minijack on one end and 2 RCA connectors on the other end to plug into the receiver. Would this work? Is this what is supposed to be done with these jacks? Would this give me (adequate) surround sound in games?
