I just picked up an ASRock 939Dual Motherboard and it has 7.1 Channel sound through the onbard Realtek 850.. I was thinking about just using the onboard sound and ditching my Audigy 2.. Any real advantages or disadvantages there?

There is a lot of disadvantages to using realtek. It will use more CPU time, not sound as good as a standalone card(although this really depends on the hardware on the motherboard), will not have support for EAX 3+ for games.

As for advantages, well, you would be saving a PCI slot....

Really it depends on what you want sound for. If its just to listen to mp3's and videos, then the onboard might be good enough. But if play games then the audigy 2 is the better choice. I would suggest that you go ahead and install the card and use for a day then hook your speakers up to the onboard sound and use it for a day. If you do not notice any kind of difference then don't use the audigy. But for the life of me, I do not know why you would consider not using the audigy if you already have it :)

i went from realtek sound on my asus board to and audigy 2 zs, there was no comparison. in games or music. i have a lower end altec lansing 5.1 system(100 bucks) but replaced the front speakers with the ones from an old aiwa shelf system when they were still good. the sound is extremely clear even at loud volumes. it was a great choice.
