Is it just me, or does this chipset suck. I have a Geforce Gak8nF-9 board. I get loud popping/cracking sounds in BF2 when tanks are firing.

Any game that makes more than a few sounds at one time, it sounds like garbage. Sometimes, sounds completley disapear. Its not in any particular game, it just happens all the time no matter what.

Its perfectly fine if I play music in media player.

No, its not the amplifier. I have four amps, ive swapped them around, nothing.

Yes, I have played around with the volume gain controlls in windows. Lowering it to about 3/4 volume seemed to help on the horrible cracking and distortion, but there is still a fair amount. Its about the same as my 1992 SB16 sound card.

Any ideas? I have the most current driver, that gigabytes website has. Its the same one that was shipped on the cd.

Running windows SP2, s939 1.8Ghz winchester core, 1 gig of mushkin ddr400 ram, Gigabyte Geforce 6600GT PCI express.
 
Well since the CPU has the process all your 3D sounds which could lead to pops/crackle especially with a game like BF2. I don't think better drivers would help in this situation..
 
Depends on the shielding and how well the AC97 is implemented, Some mobos are much better sounding than others with the same codec.
 
i had to use the input on the back of my mb for my headphones. using the front jack of my case had much interference...audio cable routed past cpu, mb, hd. i could hear alot of noise associated with the hd when being accessed. but the crackle you mention does occur in sh3 after i torpedo a ship. crackle and stutter when the ship explodes. and i just got a new sound card so i hope this fixes that problem. onboard sound is what it is...cheap.
 
I feel your pain. I have the same issues with BF2. I have a gigabyte mobo as well that uses the AC97 audio.

I am heading to Best Buy this evening to get a new sound card.
 
but dont replace onboard with a crappy pci sound card, atleast get the Soundblaster Live if you're going to get the cheapest one..

been playing with it for a while now and after first install i thought my onboard had better sound :eek: and actually it did...

however, when i was installing drivers i unplugged my headphones from the mb(which must have triggered the asus auto detection) cause the drivers hung at 70% for a bit then finished. and man did this card sound like crap. very muddy and distorted.

uninstalled and reloaded drivers and all is better...still kind of muddy in the bass to mids. been playing with the eq and its alot better but my first impression wasn't good at all and i'm still swapping with the onboard comparing...got to let my ears stop ringing - my ath-a500's get loud.

to get back on topic, my gaming stutter is gone which is good. i did hear some pops though - not good. oh well, my quest for perfection never stops.
 
Think another slot might help possibly? A few that i know that decided to buy this card really do like it and say it's really that much better than an Audigy 2 (i have an A2 OEM). Hope you get it dialed in and it's worth your money. Is it any better now? Or just the same?
