Really weird drive problems

I have 2x 500gig 7200.12 drives in raid 0 right now and when it boots up, it says the 2nd drive has errors on it. After it gets to the boot screen it will either freeze up and blue screen dump (atikmpag.sys) or just plain reboot. Once the computer has rebooted though everything works fine.

This is a really weird problem and ive never seen or heard of it before. Should i delete the array and try again? I have everything backed up..

I would start by looking at the SMART of the drives. It could be that the motor is going bad or the hard drive is having trouble reading the firmware from the platter.

Install CrystalDiskInfo. Depending on your controller it may not be able to see into the raid, in that case install HD Sentinel.

HD Sentinel says everything is all good.

So could this be a windows/driver thing or is it hard drive?

Well, it is possible. First thing to make sure of is that you have the latest System BIOS, controller bios and all associated drivers. The other thing is that atikmpag.sys is a graphic driver, not a disk driver and this issue may be unrelated to your disks. Is your system and / or video card overclocked?

Here is a link to an amd forum post on atikmpag.sys dumps: http://forums.amd.com/game/messageview.cfm?catid=260&threadid=104677

cpu is overclocked (in sig) and vid cards are stock.

Why in the bootup screen it says one of my drives has errors then? im soo confused

This only happens on cold boot btw.

If you go back to standard clocks does the problem go away? Also, did you overclock your PCIe clock as well as your system clock? Sometimes some of the X58's would underclock it to 99.x or 101 or above (it should be 100). And have you made sure all your firmware and drivers are updated?

The only thing i havnt tried is go back to stock clocks. Everything is updated. Would an overclocked cpu cause this type of thing?

so what do i do about the raid error on the bootup screen? It hangs there for a good 10 seconds for you to press "CTRL I"

Overclocks can cause all manner of problems. You are running the CPU at ~140% of rated speed, so clock it back to normal and run a chkdsk on the volume and see if that makes any difference before we look to other things.

k so stock clocks now and i get into windows everytime. But......when i try to load a program or firefox, it crashes with the atikmpag.sys error :(

Well, it looks like the overclock was causing the first problem then. Now try removing and then reinstalling your video drivers.

wow! had to do a system restore. Tried un-installing video drivers and installing new ones and my screen went totally garbled! something about compatability mode? all i could see was black, white, red and blue colors:eek:

Ill try installing new ones overtop this time :)

Well. Bought a Force GT 120gig drive and did a fresh install of everything and cpu is running stock.

Im still getting atikmpag.sys bluescreens :(
