Okay guys, I want to get a new LCD monitor for christams for now more than $700. I'm having a very hard choice and need your guy's help. I have taken a fancy to dell monitors so will probally go with one of them. It will be mainly used for computing and gaming, somtimes xbox playing and in a few months 360 playing, and maybe some TV, mostly focused on PC gaming though. Now heres the choice and please help sway me the right way.

1. Get a 2005fpw then have money for a 7800GTX

2.Spring for the 2405FPW and only have enough for a 7800GT.

Now, if I could find a 2405 for around $650, I wouldn't be here. But right now I can't. Can you guys please tell me the pros and cons of each and why or why nots.

Thanks for the help,

Alex

I don't know, how well this is going to fly for you but maybe you could get fw900 24" WideScreen CRT of ebay for like 400 w/ 2 year warranty, and then maybe get a GTX512, or a 7800GT SLI setup. Anyways, I don't think the GT will be enough to push, max detail at 19x12. 2005/GTX, or fw900/GT SLI, GTX 512mb.

You will utilize the extra space on the screen way more often then you will be stressing your card to the point you need a GTX.

I'd go for the 2405 because it'll probably see you through several generations of video cards. The GT is a good card and you should be able to run most things you play at native resolutions. On top of that, SLI remains open to you.

Yeah, I think I am going to go this route then step up to the GTX 512mb when I get the cash.

Of those two, I'd get the 24". As has been said before, nice monitors stay nice for years. You could always go SLI with a 7800GT, and it's got plenty of power. Or just sell it and upgrade later when you get more cash. It seems that what most people around here do...

Actually, personally I'd get a new mobo ($400-500... Opteron dual ugh) and a 7800GTX, but I've already got one of those used eBay Sony GDM-FW900 24" monster 92.6 lb CRTs.

Would one of those huge CRT's be better than a 2405? I mean I would go that route, but don't know if I could deal with the weight and ginormity.

EDIT: Wow they are really cheap! How do the sony fw900 image quality stack up to the 2405? Is it true HD? can it diplay 1080i or whatever for 360?

Gotta show my love for my 2405. Plus, the difference between the 20'' and 24'' is like a minimum of $400, where the diff. between the two cards is only like $175 max. If you can stretch it, I think the 2405 would make for a bigger "WOW" factor, especially with gaming and multitasking...video card is something you can always upgrade when new ones come out/old ones drop in price. Pony up for the wonder that is the Dell FPW2405 :D

I really think Im gonna go with the sony fw900. I mean at $380 with the same size, image quality, and features, I don't see how it can be beat. Also getting this lets me get a 7800GTX and maybe even a 512GTX when price goes down.

Well it comes down to what you want. The fw900 won't let you down in terms of image quality, but it does have other problems.

Depth: you'd better have a lot of it behind your desk. It's a CRT and it has a lot of booty because of its massive size.

Weight: Let's just say I would recommend lanning is out with this badboy. I'm not saying that it's a matter of being strong or weak, but it's bulky and putting it in a car and all that other stuff is a hassle.

It doesn't have pixel perfect gemoetry like an LCD, of course the colours are much better than an LCD, and the response time (or lack there of) is to die for.

[Edited to add:] Features: The 2405fpw has more of them. It has 5 different inputs which can be switched to, and the Sony only has two both of which are VGA. More connection options on the 2405fpw make it a much more versatile monitor. This allows it to do more than double duty for PC/Console/Movie use if it is desired. Not to mention the USB hub, which is also a nice touch.

Cost: This might be the bottom line, frankly the LCD's are a lot more expensive (as noted) but I personally went the LCD route, and haven't looked back. It's up to you to make the informed decision.

My vote (read: opinion) would be to go for the 2405fpw and the GT, and then sit on that for a while, and wait for next gen hardware. Frankly for at least what is out now, a single GT is more than plenty fast.

If you really must upgrade, then getting a second GT is much more cost efficient then getting a 512 GTX. Unless you intend to get two of those, which is even more hard earned cash I would recommend not even buying the GT in the first place (simply wait a little longer and buy the 512 GTX outright).

Anyway that's my two cents.

Well, the weight and size are the two main problems. I love mine, but I haven't moved it since I got it. Getting it in and out of my car was a bit of a bitch.

As for resolution, it's beyond HD. Actually the 2405 is too. 1080i is something like 1920x1080. The recommended mode for both screens is 1920x1200.
The FW900 will also do 2304x1440@75Hz "officially" though getting up to 80Hz is not a problem. 2304x1440 will take some tweaking. The mode doesn't seem to autodetect & installing the monitor drivers didn't help, so you'd have to add it manually in your vid card's control panel. NV Forceware doesn't have a problem doing it. That mode is really only useful in games. While 1920x1200 is sharp, 2304x1440 is not. It's actually rather nice in a lot of games, though you need a gfx card that can take it. It's like getting free AA.

The picture quality is excellent for a CRT, assuming you get one that's working right. These things were top of the line units when they were made. The list price on the Sony version was $2500 I think.

Basically the CRT's better for games, video, and serious image/video editing where color & contrast are really important. The LCDs are better at pretty much everything else- sharper, brighter, lighter, smaller (depth-wise only) use less power, etc. Then there's the whole looks factor. Most people think the LCDs look better. I happen to agree.

edit: For the 360, you'll need the VGA adapter. There's a whole thread about these things. Someone's already hooked on up to a 360. Have a look at the last couple pages:

Cool, looks like I will be purchasing it. Weight it no issue seeing as how I don't lan it it will stay in one spot.
