Really odd SN95G5 power button problem

So I just got my SN95G5, 3200+, and 1gb of corsair valueselect (I don't plan to do much o/c'ing) in, and got it all installed and working. First time plugging the power in and the system immediately started up, I didn't even have to press the power button, so at first I didn't notice anything was wrong.

Later on, I had to shutdown to pop in a PCI card. Upon plugging everything back in and hitting the power button, nothing happened. The LEDs on the mobo were on, but no power up. I tried it multiple times and nothing. I even tried busting out my trusty screwdriver and manually making contact with the power pins the jumper row (for an external power supply), and even that resulted in no booting. The only way I could get it to boot would be to unplug the power cable, clear the CMOS, then plug the power cable back in. I've even tried flashing the bios to no success.

Has anyone else had a problem like this? It's quite annoying, but I'd hate to RMA it then find out that I could have fixed it some other way. Do you all think it's more likely a software problem, or a hardware problem?
 
My guess would be a hardware problem but I am certainly not sure.

I have a button question too:


The smaller button next to the bigger button, what does it do?

I am guess by default it does nothing, but can you program it to do something?
 
PCI card? Why? What for?
Is Your SN95G5 V2,x or V1,x?
What's Your BIOS version?

Well it sounds to Me that that PCI card takes resources that are reserved for some on board function. Like if it's a Sound card diable first on board sound and then turn off Your PC and install PCI card. Also install it with power cord out to avoid power on activity start up. If You are not using Parallel port of Floppy drive or serial ports disable it in BIOS it will give You more free resources for add on card. Make shure card is good inserted and it's components or pins doo not touch HDD and optical drive mounting bracket.

I already tried removing the PCI card and it does the same thing. Using a v2.0 with the latest bios (can't remember what the numbering is exactly- it's the latest one on shuttle's website)
 
Well, I emailed shuttle with a description of the problem. At the worst I'll end up RMAing the case and using my ole p3 750mhz laptop with linux for a few weeks until I can get the new one back... or does Shuttle cross-ship?

the smaller button is a reset button, like to restart the pc.
 
I've got what seems to be the exact same problem. WERE YOU ABLE TO GET A PICTURE TO OUTPUT TO THE MONITOR?

I put the PC together last weekend, but as soon as I plugged it in, the power came on and the fan started going at full speed. I couldn't get any picture to output to the monitor. I was unable to view the BIOS or anything else, with only the RAM, CPU and graphics card in place.

I took the PC apart again, put it back together (checking everything thoroughly) and re-tested. Same problem.

I re-set the CMOS. No change.

I tried only one stick of RAM (512MB) in slot 1. No change.

Checked the motherboard manual, but was unable to find any problem with my set-up.

I then tested the components in a friend's PC (non-Shuttle) and they all worked fine.

I RMA'ed the SN95G5 to SCAN.CO.UK, but they've tested it and are saying it's not faulty. I wasn't getting much help from them, but after getting shitty with their support (shouldn't really have to), a consultant suggested that the BIOS might need flashing, because of a problem getting the barebones system to work with the AMD Athlon 64 3200 Winchester, as opposed to Newcastle.
I'm sceptical, but am willing for them to try and will post the results here.
What else can I do?!

Does anyone have any other suggestions, as I'm desperate now?!? I know it could be a compatibility issue, but I know other people use the 9600XT with no problems and the Crucial RAM is supposed to be compatible.

I have the following components:

Shuttle SN95G5V2
AMD Athlon 64 3200 Winchester
1GB Crucial DDR 3200 RAM
Sapphire 9600XT 256MB graphics
Seagate Barracuda 200GB SATA HDD
Pioneer DVR-109 DVD drive
 
My problem isn't the exact same- mine wouldn't start AT ALL, no fans spinning or anything. As in, the power button wasn't even working. However, after getting a replacement SN95G5 in and it having the same problem, I finally narrowed it down- my Sapphire Radeon 9700NP. I removed it from the system, and hit the power button, and it started up, fans spinning and everything. Put it back in- power button didn't work again. So, for some extremely odd reason, my Radeon is incompatible with my system.

If you have another video card, I suggest trying a different video card- otherwise, since your problem does seem a bit worse, I'm not sure exactly what else you could try :\

Can you confirm...did you get a picture on the monitor at this point?

Mine fires up as soon as it's plugged in and that's not right, aside from the fact that I can't output a picture.

Yes, I got a picture on the monitor. The Shuttle works perfectly fine if I unplug it, reset the cmos, the plug it back in- everything immediately starts up and it POSTs, boots into Windows, etc. However, if I shut it down, then press the power button, nothing starts up- not even the fans.
 
I too have a similar power problem. In my case the power will not go OFF. The system will do a fine soft reboot, but a shutdown stops with the screen losing signal, the drives all spin down, and the orange HD light stays on as well as a low noise fan. The system is definitely off, but I have to unplug it and plug it back in before I can restart.

I've removed everything but the CPU and it's still the same (well, okay, I only removed one memory chip at a time). I'd rather keep what I have than RMA, so if anyone has a fix idea I'd be grateful.

mine does a similar type of thing when i shutdown. all i have to do it push the reset button and then the power button and it comes right on. i dont know what the deal is with that but it comes right on and i have no problem.
