I have a really odd problem with my sound in windows XP. When I play music in winamp, watch movies in WMP, or play games I get perfect sound. When I boot up I get no sound and when I use flash I get no sound. I'm using the latest driver. I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling/rebooting and all that good stuff. Any ideas on how to fix this?

kind of a dumb idea but have you double clicked on the sound icon and made sure all boxes were unchecked... sometimes sound gets muted in there. Other wise very strange problem. I'd imagine you have a setting somewhere that needs to be unchecked.

Everything is unmuted. I can hear sound coming from winamp just fine, but I don't get any of the standard windows sounds and I get no sound in flash.

SO every other sound is normal. Videos (all the voices come through the correct channels, etc...) sound normal, music sounds normal... What is your sound card/speaker setup?

playing mp3, watching videos, playing games, all flawless. Windows system sounds and flash = nothing.

My mobo has an ALC650 audio chipset. I have it plugged in to headphones.

all my ideas are kind of stretches.... I was wondering if you did the speaker set up in windows and told it you were using headphones... I can't think though why this would matter b/c you are getting the correct channels for other things. I know there is an option to turn off windows sounds but I don't remember where that is... I'll take a peak today and see if I can't find it. It is possible that got turned off or modified by something.

i encountered the same issue, just the other day.

i disabled sounds for windows messenger and somehow that move effectively disabled all of my system sounds... which also turned off the sound for my browser. it was impossible to re-enable the sounds for some reason or another. very odd.

games, cd's, dvds, mp3s all worked perfectly still, but any streaming video i tried to watch was without audio.

so... i looked for someone that had the same problem, and there were plenty. however, there seems to be no real concrete solution.

anyways, i ended up doing a repair on the OS install and all is well again... huge pain in the ass for something that seems like it should be really simple to fix though.

hopefully someone with a better solution to this issue hops aboard this thread here and lets at least the [H] readers know how to fix this problem a little more efficiently.

so far, for anyone else who happens upon this bug, the solution is to perform a repair of your OS. save yourself the trouble of tinkerin around with the control panel and just go for the repair... trust me :p
