Really Dark Display

So I got a older PC from a friend since they got a new computer, planning on using it as a MAME machine, but there is one set back. The monitor (Maxtech, Manufactured July 1997, and It says on the front of the monitor Low Radiation.) is really dark, so dark that I sometimes I can't even see some grey text. Now I fiddled with the monitor controls (Degauss, RGB, etc) It helps a little but it still doesnt work that great. Could it be something to do with an outdated driver? Or Is the monitor simply just getting old?

If anyone could help, I would appreciate it.

Yeah, monitors just start to go after a while. I've got an aging KDS crt sitting next to me that isn't even as old as yours and its not really usable anymore.
