dudes, i was working on this old computer, and i found this inginutitive(sp) heat sink design, and i wanna know why we still arent using it today. Note, this is a very small heat sink, so size might be an issue...but it seems to me that this design *MIGHT* be better...

sure there is the possiblity of cracking the die, but i'm sure that can be remedied by a limiting notch or something of the like...

for those not able to view the pictures....it works like this..

you slide the chip into a sort of bracket. this bracket has a hole in it...this hole has threading on it...there is a heatsink, and a fan. this heatsink hase a threaded cylinder 1/4 of an inch thik... this is then rotated/screwed into the plastic cpu holder untill it comes in contact with the top of the chip...
 
i think that a design like that could be fairly useful. the only issue, like you said, is size. if companies made bigger heatsinks like that made of aluminum or copper, they could work. then again, the performance would probably be the same as they are now, and would cost more to manufacture (that special plastic bracket). o well.... innovative idea though....
 
I actually have one of those that I got with an old p1 a friend gave me ('cept the little bracket on mine was metal.. yours looks like plastic) it was a 166mhz computer with EDO memory.... and the reason we don't use them is you don't get good enough contact. Since the center is being pushed in and the edges being pushed out, it's essentially being bent, I tightened it as far as I could with a pair of vice grips... the side parts of the CPU litterally got broken off and ripped out of the ziff socket... the reason we don't use them is because in order to get tight enough contact, you can't put that much pressure on the CPU, you have to be pushing the CPU against the motherboard, not just pushing the CPU against itself.
 
This design was great for first and second-gen Socket Seven...but it faded later due to a number of reasons. The fins weren't big enough to be effective on later high-temperature processors. The mounting mechanism only worked really well for completely ceramic CPU's, such as the Pentium. It didn't work well at all with the heatspreaders of the K-6, or the PPGA Pentium MMX processors, and couldn't dissipate enough heat anyway. The circular mounting surface didn't always cover the full surface area of the chip well. Other designs did and dissipated heat better, and other larger designs were also more compatible with bigger fans. Also, if you screwed one down too tight, you'd break it or the chip (usually the heatsink would go first because the chip-holder portion of the `sink was plastic, but you could crack a ceramic processor if you were determined).

I remember putting a lot of those on Pentium 100-133 systems when I worked in a shop. We got better heatsinks when P-166 CPU's became common. Like your pictures, I also keep an AMD K5-90 in my CPU collection for old time's sake.
