Ok so I tore apart a Dell xps to try and stuff into a short rack case and was a no go. Anyway I have my mobo im going to use setup and it has 6 fan connectors for 4 pin fans.

Dell fans have long cables so wanted to use them as they too are 4 wire... plugs in and looks fine but im wondering if I can shuffle the wires around. The Dell has the black connector ends vs the standard white plug.

I know I know buy new fans... trying to recycle what i have before they go into the trash plus I have 2 60mm fans that seem to pump put some air and are the thick style fans...

anyway help the fan n00b out please..

google is showing this.. work is blocking the link but in google search im seeing it so hope it shows here.. wondering if i just change the wires around...

Cool. Glad you figured it out. Always nice to use what you have on hand.

We wont fault you for wanting to reuse components. I have fans from so long ago still running and I will probably repurpose them should I ever upgrade.

this whole thing has been a PITA.... and yes I am using 2 of the fans right now...

I hear ya. I don't have the cash right now with few bills, saving for kitchen redo and all.

This entire thing started from a storm taking out my motherboard in my OptiPlex 745. I then threw a Dell Precision T3500 in its place but I'm not feelin it with that..

I got a dell xps dual core which will run my quad core xeon and has 6 sata ports...
tried dissecting it and putting it into my shallow depth case to no avail.

so I bought a supermicro tower from ebay with dual xeon and 24gb fb-dim??? for $117 to my door.

I wanted to put that in my shallow depth rack case and had it in but so many issues. I can only run 3 drives as I cant put the other drive bay in, sound card will not fit as it hits the drives. So I was recommended a shallow depth case but it seems my cpus sit on the outside and I do not think the heatsinks will clear the bottom so that is a no go..

long story short I am back to the supermicro tower case with 4 hot swap bays, supermicro mobo but with 2 of these dell fans. Seems to be keeping it cool enough for now..

now other issues but hey I will figure that out or post a q...

I am having the worst luck getting this machine together ..

my purpose:
Server 2012R2 essentials
PC backups
Home automation - running homeseer
video streaming
CCTV machine
Family photo, videos, files repository

all that down.. it is killing me...
