so i go to fix this person's computer, xp,office 2003,etc. I accidentally leave the xp cd in and their grandson starts another installation and stops halfway through. so i take it and im like whatever...reformat easy. so i format and install xp while the hard drive was connected to my computer (i was salvaging some files) so i pop it back in their computer and start it up. doesn't load up. says something about NTDLR missing. i try formatting again and now i get a bluescreen while at the windows install (the colored one with the xx minutes left and stuff) sayin it has to do a physical memory dump because of a problem.

what the hell is going on :(
 
Well, I'm definitely no expert but I've run into something like this before but never with Windows XP. For me it happened back with Windows 98. Basically it sounds as if, during the new install you did, it didn't recognize the hard drive you were installing to as the boot device and therefore it didn't install or correctly install the files needed for startup. I don't know if there's another way to take care of this but when it happened to me the only thing I could was another full install.

that sounds right..im gonna try with the slow format and an xp cd i know is unscratched for sure. if that doesn't work...i have no idea

any other ideas though?
 
it is a gateway btw. i tried to install again with a cd i know is good etc.


it almost finished the install then did the physical memory dump sayin there was a problem
"PFN-List-corrupt"

i dunno this is really pissin me off...what can i do
 
First. I would download Memtest86 and install it onto a floppy/bootable CD.
Run three loops to check for memory errors.
Any errors iswhy Windozes wont install.

After that the best thing to do is whipe the drive clean with a low level/ zero fill format.
That way there is no leftover rubbish on the drive which can disrupt a new install.

Just my 0.02 worth.
