Reallocated Sectors Count keeps growing

I previously had a thread about this drive here: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1789171, where I had some bad sectors and was able to resolve SOME by a full-reformat.

At the time, the number of reallocated sectors remained at 120. Yesterday, I noticed it was 390. Today, it's 398.

I've also noticed odd issues where transferring files from that drive causes the entire system to freeze for a bit, but will slowly become responsive after several minutes.

So, while I'm about 99% convinced I need a new drive, I wanted to check with the community before I throw away my relatively new (but out of warranty) 3TB drive.

Also, it's hex, so 398 is really 920 reallocated sectors.

If reallocated sectors keeps growing like that you really do have to chuck the drive. Sometihng is going horribly wrong on the drive and it's gonna be a really bad time when they run out.

That should be enough of an indication right there.

But yes, reallocated sectors is one of SMART's "critical" attributes that signals a "Potential indicator of imminent electromechanical failure."
 
If the reallocated sector count was stable, it might be ok to keep it; but since it's still growing, and quickly, I think it's way past its prime.

Definitely work out where you're copying your data ASAP. System freezes are probably related to read errors that get retried after a long delay.
 
Here's a twist (and a question).

When I run all the tests on SeaTools and the WD diagnostics, they all pass: SMART. generic short tests, all of them.

I mentioned the freezes that happen when transferring large files (10GB+), but I've only noticed it when copying between two local drives. When copying across a network, it's fine and consistent. Any insight to this?

In regard to the screenshot above, what's the difference between the "raw value" and "current"?

The Current, Worst, and Threshold are just arbitrary numbers that the manufacturer uses. It's usually based on 100 (probably to keep it like a percent score) or 255 (cause thats the max size of a byte). The manufacturer says once the score for that attribute drops below 20, SMART will turn that attribute "red" and tell you the drive is about to fail.

The RAW value on the other hand is just a chunk of data used by the manufacturer. Different drive manufacturers use the RAW value differently so it can be hard to say what it really means for any given attribute. For reallocated sectors though It's usually pretty clear that it's simply a count of the number of sectors that have been reallocated.
