what happened to cool case modding. Like in some other sites or once in a while you see a case thats actually art. most of the cases here in pictures and such people put on its basically the same stuff. expensive computers. Im not saying that they suck or anything. but i think real modding is totally changing the case, painting it cool colors, cutting parts out/adding stuff on. its not just buying expensive looking cards, or mobos, and adding cool looking watercooling with lots of lights. What i want to see is cases that are completely different than from what you see in other pictures. people need to actually mod the case and not the small parts inside it.

If you dissagre dont yell just tell state why, this is a discussion not a stupid yelling space.

I agree, most mods are cool in here, but I would like to see some REALLY original work with the cases, the cases i see on here are alot better than mine and everything, but im up for some more crazy mods :-D

Ok, if you want to see cases like that, why don't you do it?
Most people do not have the time/money/inspiration/tools/skills/access to materials to do large mods. If they did then you would be completely happy :)

u said they dont have time/money/inspiration/tools/skills/access. well i might agree with time to be a limiting factor. money, no cause there cases are expensive watercooled, custom painted some times, and other things that cost money. inspiration, yea well thats what makes a case cool good inspiration so if you dont have it dont post a case thinking its a super mod. tools, they got money go buy some. skills, practice. access, they live somewere with a table, some people might work with some sort of access they can use.

I dont think those are very good arguments to suggest that thats why people dont do intresting mods. I kind of find it ironic that the people that really have inspiration and skills dont have the money to do that kind of stuff. and the people with the money dotn have much skills or creativity. thats sort of a bad sterotype but its true for most cases.

oh and i dont do it cause i dont have the money, tools, or space to do it.

First of all, I think you are a complete jerk for complaining about what people are doing about their own computers. Second of all, did it ever occur to you that not everyone wants a piece of high-art on their desk? Maybe some people just want to put lights and windows in to show off their stuff. Maybe people put cool-looking water cooling solutions in because they want to improve cooling, and they want people to be able to see it. Oh, and here's a novel idea, maybe people are happy with what they have done to their cases. Maybe they even LIKE it.

Maybe you can work on your own case, and show all of us poor fools what a real mod is, instead of just shitting on everybody else's work.

Good job hammerhead, sock it to 'em.
Flaming Teddiz, it is ironic that people with the money have no inspiration, and people with inspiration have no money (me), but your arguement is invalid.
People would do mods, but they need to have all of those fields before they can do an original mod.

e.g. Someone might have enough money and inspiration, but they dont have the time to learn the skills required to do it.
Or someone might have time, money, skills inspiration, everything they need except tools, but are they really going buy a mill to make their own copper phase change block if they just use it once.
People who attempt the mods you ask for have access to all the tools they need without spending ridiculous amounts of money just to satisfy their inspiration.
There are exceptions to this rule, and they are the people you see already, doing original stuff to their cases.

Mmmm...I just started my fisrt mod ever. (in worklogs titled: Noob Mod: WW2) I guess this is one of your boring case case mods...but its what i wanted to do and not so way out there it consumes every moment of my life. I do knwo what you mean though. Liek the Doom3 mods and soem of the HL2 mods....their art in themselves. Not everyone wants a mod like that though.....

Modding takes time. A lot of it. There are cases that take many months to finish. Mine has always been a work in progress... Instead of bashing people's desire to do some form of modding, you should praise the fact that they even try and understand that their needs and wants might be a little different from yours... This is pointless though... You sit there and cry about it, "feed me" "spoon it for me"... Sheesh, go mod something your damn self and see how much work it takes... It is quite evident how little you understand the modding scene when you create a new username on the forum and proceed to start the flaming... Otherwise start modding and learn from others...

Modding computers is not for everyone and the tinkering of any hobby has a following of it's own. For every computer modder out there, there is some other hobby that someone else is good at. It isnt fair to sit there and criticize when you know nothing of their situations...

Expensive computers doesnt mean someone is into modding. How many expensive Ferrari's out there went out and cut the back half off the car? How many cars do you see out there on the road that someone is modding on their own? Sure there are a lot, but what percentage would you argue that is? I would say that computer modding and modding of any other kind is about on par in ratios...

That's not his point. It's like commenting on professional football--you don't have to be in the NFL to have the right to talk shit about players, teams, referees, the state of football, etc.

He didn't say that he could do better, and if he did, he would have to prove it.

I think the idea of that statement was to inquire to the computer he built. This NFL thing is hardly a good comparison. The NFL is a limited league organization and limited membership by the league. Owning a computer is not limited by an organization, only mild personal funding. I think the inference is that this person being interested in computers likely owns one, he is online after all (of course he could be at a library, which I highly doubt) and therefore is subject to the same scrutiny he so easily places on others.

Ok I will not yell at you beacause you are a n00b and doesn't know better.

It would however help if you actually did look around a bit before you start flaimbait threads. Yes your nick doesn't prove the opposite either unfortunately.

Move the mouse pointer to the Worklog section and you might be up for a surprise... ;)

Well everyone that has said something bad, or insulting and you should know who you are I dont know your reasoning of insulting me. Im not insulting any one else or anyones mods so i dont see why you should feel the need to insult me unless you are mentaly disdurbed.

Last time I checked forums were supposed to be places to discuss things. not answer questions and start flaming. (by the way my name has nothing at all to do with flamming on boards). So i mainly wanted to discuss and talk about the fact that there are not a lot of crafty case mods like i have seen before. cause when i think of modding i think of something spectacular. but im sure there are many levels and if you think of this as a hobby which most do than some people might spend more time than others and have more money. so i dont want to insult anyone or start a war i just wanted to discuss the fact or reason that people keep showing basically the same sort of stuff and not all that origional.

Look at his name... hes starting a FLAME durrr. My idea of case modding was to put silent fans, load them up with Dynamat and silicone and then stick a light in one of them. They're clean, they're cool, they're powerful and they don't have to be chopped to bits to do that. Modding isn't necessarily about making a funky looking case that's non functional but beautiful. Its about the little details that set apart the cases people who love their computers own, and the cases that get stamped out in a factory, stuffed with cheap components and then bought by people who think it will break their computer to take the side pannel off.

: puts on a flame suit:
I know someone is going to yell at me for this one.
I honestly do not think the Doom3 mod that keeps getting front-paged is very innovative. Yes, it took ALOT of skill, and it’s impressive, but it’s more or less a scratch-built model with a computer inside. (Unless I’m missing something else it does)

I love cases that are very innovative or try new ideas.

The biggest thing I dislike about the mod scene is premeds, and the people who buy them then DONT put any work into them.

When you say that, you're telling most of the casual modders here you don't consider their case modded. This marginalizes their efforts, and that's what people take offense to.

...What I want to see is...
...People need to...
While we appreciate suggestions and new ideas, most of the people here don't mod for your benefit. People don't need to do anything. The fact is that most of these mods are done to give the owner a sense of pride and accomplishment, not to lead the modding community. They certainly don't do it for your personal enjoyment - they do it for their own enjoyment. And, if you don't consider it a real mod, that's your opinion and you're certainly entitled to it... but when you say that our mods aren't "real" because they don't do something that's absolutely innovative, you belittle almost everyone who's posted their mods in this forum.

If I wanted to see art, I'd go to an art museum... But, no, I go to the Case Modding section here, to see exactly that, case mods.

If you want to see real art in here, you might want to start by doing some "real art" yourself.

I think what you're looking for is "case builders" rather than "case modders"

CHECK SIG! :D

Good job micky and SEAL, you seem to be doing a better job than I did of explaining to Teddy why people are getting p***ed off at him.

I grew up and had kids.

I still appreciate great mods, but for me, I just can't seem to find the time to mod anymore.
The last case I "really modded" was over a year ago.

Stock Case

Finished Case

My mods lately have been hiding wires, blue LEDs, or store bought controllers - (not really mods at all) :(

Damn...now I'm bummed...

I can see both points of view. Tweaking cases, like adding windows, watercooling, lights, etc takes skill to do well and is modding. So is turning your computer into a so called "work" of art. Modding doesn't have a definition, just like art doesn't. Modifying a computer is in fact what modding is, that is the exact term used here.

To each their own. I chose to modify an old plywood trunk I had sitting around into my watercooling case because it had more space, sorry no pics as it's being changed back to aircooling because i have A64 parts headed my way and no funds for a new waterblock. I also won't have a good digital cam before x-mas. anyways, wether it is modifying a case or all out building one doesn't devalue the fact that it is modding.

I'm going to keep my old computer and modify or build a new case for it just to play with. I've got plans for an enclosed fountain or sorts, not that functional in terms of sheer watercooling performance, but who cares it should look decent when done. And I'll be taking in process pics this time.

I don't think one can nail down what a piece of "art" case is compared to a case that's been slighly modified. In all my years of studying art I've learned that art doesn't have to meet standards or expectations by viewers, all it has to do is make somebody think, even if that thought includes, why did all they do was add lights and a fan.

So you're saying you have a crappy computer, are completely broke, and don't live somewhere with a table or know anybody?

Ok, ok, I'll buy that. But why are you shocked when people flame you? You just called their cases "not real mods," when I know a lot of people are proud of their cathodes, windows, and clean wiring jobs, and are happy with their cases, myself included. I put a lot of work into my computer, but it doesn't qualify as a real mod, apparently.

You're right, a forum is a place to discuss things. So just discuss case modding, don't tell people that their hard work doesn't count. If you didn't have that "n00bie" under your name, maybe your thread would be taken more seriously. Then again, if you weren't a n00bie, you wouldn't start a thread like this in the first place.

Bye troll.

Heres my case.

When I started modding it.
PICT0113.jpg

It used to be a tan case but I painted it a textured black, then I cut in those two 120mm fan holes.

PICT0115.jpg

Again, cut another 120mm fan hole in it. This time on the top.

PICT0116.jpg

Front of it, cut another 120mm fan hole in the bottom of it then made the AMD grill (I know it looks like crap it's not permanent).

PICT0118.jpg

Done.

Almost.....then I decided to attack it again.

PICT0006.jpg

No more fans.

PICT0007.jpg

PICT0009_001.jpg

PICT0013.jpg

Before I did some wire management.

PICT0014.jpg

Replaced the single fan controller with a much nicer one.

PICT0017.jpg

Added 2 blue neon tubes.

Keep in mind its still not done and I have plans on hitting it again when I go to install my XP-120 which hopefully I can get after Christmas. So, the window is coming out and I'm going to install a door and DVD player, I'll be painting taht CD drive and adding a whole bunch more stuff as well. Its an ever evolving project and I don't ever forsee it being completed.

As for what type of case this is, I have no idea. I've had it since 1993 and there are no identifying marks on it to inform anyone what it is. Its a rather tall case but its narrow. I'm guessing it may have been at one point a server casxe of some sort but I'm not sure. It used to be my brothers.

modding doesnt have to be expensive, require alot of tools....

i did my project complete case (transferred components from previous computer) for less than 100 dollars, thats including the custom paint, the custom window, and a completely altered front... and the only tools i used were a dremel :D and a putty knife... and of course sand paper... and i got this

case1.jpg

so its not really a matter of money, nor tools

Bah, my problem would be time, I have a lot of ambition to make something wicked, but these 60 hour work weeks gotta give. I would like to see some new stuff too. But thats not an attack at anyone for the lack of. Just a statment like "I like strawberries", with no offence to bannanas. I remember the first time I stumbled upon the forums I was reading up where someone made the first led fans at home (listen up kids, this was before anything premodded existed) by placing the led's actualy on the fan blades...now for those of you who wern't around back then, just try to imagine how they'd do that. That was [H]ard.

There does seem to be 2-3 different levels of modding nowadays.

1- The basic window(s), lights, cable management

2 - All of number 1 plus custom cutting and paint

3 - Custom computer 'case' built from scratch.

I have personally done most of the basic mods that everyone has at some point or other. But I honestly don't consider myself a 'modder'. I have several ideas to build custom cases that aren't 'cases' and I will probably get started on at least one of those ideas in the spring.

I will tell you that for me it's all about originality. I think this was the point the original poster was trying to get at. I got the impressionhe was saying the case modding news has become a bit stagnant and if that's what he meant I would have to agree a tiny bit. Windows, lights and little dremmel action just don't impress like they used to.

The most original stuff I have seen lately was over at http://www.bit-tech.net/. Truly amazing and unique cases in thier articles. There have been some really good ones here as well and everyone should be proud of what they have done. I won't name any names because someone else will get pissed if I happen to forget one.

For me, when I do my custom case idea(s), I will be doing them for me only. I will probably post a worklog but I won't be looking for critique. What I build will be unique, for me, quiet, decorative, and no one will know it is a computer case unless I tell them.

Don't anyone take it personally, take it as a c[H]allenge and take case modding to the next level.

Just curious Moose, how loud is that case????
Its surprisingly quiet. Its got a hum to it but not bad.

However, if I turn the front fan up it gets loud because of the air rushing past the grill. I made the grill too big and at some point in time I'll be making a different one quite smaller.

But it's fairly quiet. I actually have plans on adding 2 more 120mm fans.

But then again, I'm crazy. LOL

i'm sorry that this place turned into a yelling space....its a very bad testimony to the kind of people we have on here....(this is the reason why people end of rioting in the streets)

BUT ANYWAY....i think you mean [H]ard case modding....not real case modding...

even putting a fan grille on ur case counts as a mod.....does it make you [H]ardcore? NO...but at least you have modded ur case.....if you want a [H]ardcore case mod..you have doom3 or that HL2 thing too look at....or maybe pull off something of ur own.

but i kinda side with you...its really very boring to be going through the case mod section and just about EVERYBODY is doing the same thing...over and over and over and over.....sure they like it, but personally its boring

Thank you WillowHawk, I think thats what I was trying to say but didnt come out right. What i meant to say was that i would just like it for there to be more um lets just say more of a difference in the cases. I never wanted to put any one down i just wanted to know how many other people have the same feelings and are intrested in seeing the cases with new windows, fans, leds, watercooling, grills, all that stuff. or if there are people that like seeing cases that have been changed like the doom3 one or im sure u know what kind im talking about, the ones that took weeks and even months to complete., im not saying that only those kind of cases that months im sure some people spend weeks to add a fan and led. but lets just drop this topic cause i bet it will only get worse because someone will come along and start even more flaming. so I apologize for acting like an a** and i wont do it again.

Apolgy accepted.
(ENIGMA, I saw how you did that case GJ)

EDIT: To Moose, you really shouldnt have that 120mm fan over the CPU. Take a look at the guide on airflow if you dont belive me.

Thanks Dragon, where is the guide on air cooling?

I believe you but why shouldn't I have it there? For future knowledge. I plan on redoing the case soon anyway so any help would be good.

Back in the day...it was enough to build a case out of wood or cut a blowhole. I remember when people got all excited about rolling up their ide cables. With something like casemodding, there is going to be a point where the simple stuff is just not going to impress any more. We definitely have hit that point, where a guy with just a dremel and a spray can is going to have to be a pretty good artist to get anything more than a courtesy complement. And the level of craft that can be seen in the best case mods is pretty high.

I would say, cut a few blowholes, waste a few dremel cutoff disks, and make a mess out of your case. If you are lucky, the realization that you aren't stuck with what the manufacturer did will open up a lot of possiblilities. The ideas will start to come.

The number of people that can really make a mindblowing case is going to decrease as time goes on. If you think about it, there could be nearly as much work in a really innovative case as there is in something like a custom motercycle. The rest of us should probably worry less about having the coolest case and concentrating on having fun messing around with cases.

i dunno about modding for art sake, i usually try to mod for functionality. some are deco touches like changing the lights, adding graphics, or whatever. but for the most part it's to increase function (primarily cooling), so i'm not trying to get all crazy with how it looks.

IMO if you take anything that comes from a manufacturer in a specific configuration and do something to it that's NOT available from the factory, then you have modded it. whether you pay someone else to do it or do it yourself is kind of irrelevant, though i have more appreciation (i would say respect but i don't want someone to take that as i don't respect other people) for people who do the work themselves.

my cases have been modded to allow more airflow, different fan configurations, watercooling, or something else functional. i have NEVER modded a case strictly for the sake of looks or "art", those did come in to play but only as a 2nd thought. the primary reasons i mod:

1) cooling
2) space (drives, components)
3) functionality (access to components, wiring simplification, etc.)
4) looks

i don't even mind a bone-stock looking case as long as something was done to make it better, even as simple a mod as cutting out the fan grills.

Amen! For months I have been planning a modded case in my head, just waiting for the time and money in order to start (this summer). I don't think that everyone has to make their case completely original in order for it to be cool. I've seen quite a few design features on cases that I love, and want to incorporate into my case. I am not saying that we should just copy other cases, thats not the point. Credit is deserved where it is due, and you shouldn't take credit for something you did not come up with. What I'm trying to say is that when you are modding your computer, you should make it look exactly how you want it. To me, case modding is about pleasing myself. Its about creating something that makes me proud of the work that I put into my computer. If it turns a few peoples heads, then thats just an added bonus :D .
