Ready Player One Teaser

Cool. I love TJ Miller. He was great in standup many years ago, too.

The more I look into the actual story and not go off a small teaser trailer, the better this sounds. Hopefully, the movie lives up to people's expectations. I'm reading the book this weekend, so hopefully I'll be a much more judgy cunt when the movie comes out. Bitching and moaning about how it wasn't true to the book, etc.. :)

If they do it right (focus on the story, with the nostalgic stuff in the background), it should be great. I just worry when people try and exploit trendy things and focus on that than any story.

So this is a virtual world where everyone on the planet hangs out but all the assets and avatars are bone stock. Want to be Freddy, red and green sweater. Want a DeLorian? You get it as it comes. They could have been really creative but decided to mass import whatever used 3d assets they could buy up and call it good.

In the book most of them were prizes and not that easy to get. The Oasis has DLC too so money gets you nicer things. The main character was poor so had whatever he managed to grind for himself. It has very "video game" rules to most of the worlds.

That was Lawnmower Man. Since that movie, I've only gotten to play VR a few times (and that was in the early 90's). I still really want to get into VR. I'm upgrading my PC because of it.

I'm pretty impressionable like that. That's why I don't watch gay porn.

What the fuck? Damn. Kinda wish I didn't read that... What a fucking douchebag. :/

Well, he does a decent job on standup and in movies, but I don't care for the guy otherwise now.

I hear ya. I fucking loved him in Silicon Valley. Haven't caught his standup yet, due to his overall shitiness.

I tried to get through the first few chapters of the book and just couldn't get past the non-stop name drops of 80's references, the first two chapters are "loser kid wakes up, gets dressed, and heads to school" but it takes about 20 pages worth of NEW COKE and JOHN HUGHES references for us to get there. I'm sure there's a decent story here, but the book felt like it was glorifying Otaku to me and I hate those hyper-nerd stereotypes. At some point I'll catch this streamed and learn what the story is all about, which from the back-cover synapses made me think it was a low-rent Neuromancer.

Which, by the way, the fact that we live in a world that will make a Ready Player ONe movie, but not touch ANY of the Cyberpunk classics like Neuromancer........just that crappy adaption of Johnny Mnemonic.......of course today they'd just call it BLADE RUNNER III: THE NEW BLOOD or something :p

DON'T give them any ideas! They'd probably use a CGI Harrison Ford too! :nailbiting:

I get that but it wasn’t just 80s. It was a world you could make up anything. The only characters who dived into the 80s where the treasure hunters or Gunter (Egg Hunter) as the book called them. Many people gave up hunting for the treasure on top of that since it took many years just to find the first clue. So by that logic the Gunters would be a minority anyways.

Plus it wouldn’t make sense just to dump say original Star Trek and pretend Kirk never happen and praise the baldness of Sir Patrick Stewart. I could very easily see all Star Treks existing in the Oasis.

Anyone else find it amusing that a movie based mostly on a VR world has too much CG? Wouldn’t it fit the setting? Might as well be saying ReBoot had too much CG. REBOOT!!

I loved that show, it's a shame it got neutered by BS&P. They should've had the Tiny Toons/Animaniacs team consult on how to effectively deploy censor decoys.

Save judgments until his masterpiece "The Emoji Movie" releases. That dude is so far up his own asshole at this point.

I see what he is trying to do, he is just doing it poorly in my opinion. He is trying to be Andy Kaufman, while telling us all he is doing it. If you want to go Kaufman you can't let the audience in on your act. You need to really make us wonder whether you truly are batshit crazy.

That's actually a fantastic comparison. He's very obviously being a troll, just not a great one.

Book was great for what is was, fantasy and nostalgia. If you were expecting Lord of the Rings, you are fooling yourself. As far the movie, I just finished the book and didn't recognize some of the scenes, but I will still be checking it out at some point.

The only recognizable stuff from the book were the trailer home stacks, the Van-sanctuary and dance party in The Distracted Globe. I 'm not expecting a exact adaptation from the book since it's Spielberg. (see Jurassic Park)
