I posted a few weeks ago how my WD ATA 100 160gb drive is running way way slower than my original 40gb. I started playing around with the Everest program and it seems my 40gb is ATA 133 and the "new" one is ATA 100. Would this be the difference between them? Everything I have read has said there isn' t a noticable difference though. One other odd thing showed up.... it looks like something is turned off or not enabled. Active UMDA Transfer Mode isn't set to anything on the 160gb :confused:

Any ideas? It seems like there is something I haven't configured yet :eek:
 
The interface shouldn't matter. Neither of the drives would be able to saturate even the ATA-100 bus.
 
So any ideas what could be slowing it down....? Is the Slave drive always a bit slower than the master drive?
 
First thing, determine what UDMA mode the thing is in... go into device manager and check under the IDE ATA controllers. Should be in UDMA mode 5 (ATA100). I'd also replace the IDE cable with a known good 40 connector, 80 wire cable.

Edit: Just checked your picture... why is your Maxtor drive running in UDMA mode 2? As for the UDMA 0 thing... that would limit your throughput to about 15MB/s. Are you sure you are using an 80 wire IDE cable or a 40 wire one? Also go into your BIOS and see what modes the drives are set for.

Ok well I went through and the UDMA is set to 2 in the Device Manager. Its greyed out though so I'm not sure how to change that....does the cable regulate the UDMA speeds?
The cable currently in there is whatever came with the Dell. The one that came with the WD is the smaller type of cable in your picture, I'm guessing its the 80? I'll give that a try and see if anythings faster I guess.
 
It won't be changeable in windows. Go into BIOS and see what the device settings are.
 
Well is this something that is limited purely by the cable? I counted the pins on these and its 40 but its the smaller one that looks like it has more pins than the bigger one in that picture.


When I check the Primary Drive info under IDE/ATA in Device Manager it says it is in UDMA Mode 5 for device 0 and 1, but in the Secondary Drive (which I'm guessing is the new one ) It says UDMA 2 for device 0 and Multi Word DMA 2 for Device 1.

Should I try completely wiping out the driver info? I guess I could reformat it and start over since all thats on it is music and games.
 
The cables have the same number of pins. They just have twice as many wires inside (two for each pin, one in each direction)

Also, I would try each drive individually (ie, no slave drive) and see if the UDMA info changes.
 
Is there an easy way to install windows xp on the other drive....? I'm guessing I can't just click and drag it over. I'm not sure how else I could try the new HD on its own and still be able to check the UDMA Mode.
