anyone have any ideas how i can prevent my case from rattlign when i turn the bass up on my woofer (its a big mofo). i have a lian li somethingorother... it just kinda gets annoying, i was thinking maybe stuffing a sock between the drive cages and the side to make it nto so loose.

The best way to eliminate rattle in a Lian Li case is to get rid of the Lian Li and get something with decent build quality.

Something like this should do nicely.

You could try some sound deadening material like paxmate. it's normally used to help in reducing vibration and absorbing ambient noise inside the case. i imagine it would help with your problem nicely.
 
Have you tried:
putting the case on your desk.
turning down the gain on your subwoofer.
securing all components with the correct size screw (the smaller "drive" screws have never really worked at all for me, so I just use the hex & circle case screws, which fit better.)
 
rubberised undercoating in a spray can? I can guess that most of the noise is just from the big panels resonating and vibrating. If so, you can only weld on some support to keep the big panels from making noise.

Just like in car doors that rattle when you dont have a muffler on a good sized V8. Nuffin i can do about it, except put on a new muffler.

Too bad they make cases out of flimsy cheap ass aluminium instead of steel so they vibrate like a whore. Plus SuperMicro and Coolermaster are probably better build quality overall, but Lian-Li would be right up there if they made steel cases. People think that aluminium is some super metal to build cases out of, its one of the worst ones cause it just vibrates with hard-drives and cd-drives. The harder you screw them in the more it vibrates, gimmie steel any day.

For the topic creater dude, i suggest going with a CM Stacker or Antec SLK/Sonata, both are steel and both dont rattle :)

Get something made of steel, aluminium is too flimsy and will vibrate.
 
My guess is he does not want to buy a new case, if he did he would have asked what cases don't rattle.

Try the foam or some matting. Maybe even some rubber grommets might help. Or just take the panel off, that would work too. :)

My 386 AT Full height server case vibrated like three whores in resonance, just from my poopy 8" 30W woofers. (try to rember highschooler kids cars with subwoofers in the trunk: Rattle rattle rattle) . A 52x cd rom drive make it sound like the whole thing was going to self destruct.

The case weighed in at 86lbs, with a ATX board, psu and some drives. That is not flimsily built...

Its mainly from the 2x4' dang-near 2mm steel panels on my big case. More area for the thing to catch the sound waves and rattle. Sound is just changes in air pressure, and 8 square feet of steel or aluminum doesnt need much pressure to rattle. I dont see shuttle people bitching about rattles.

You can weld on supports, ditch the case for something more bulletproof (OLD 1980s cases are tough), or stuff socks in it. Buy a tube of Sillicone gasket maker from Big wally (walmart), and try to make some custom rubber pads for metal panels.

Try to crank that subwoofer up close to the case and narrow down what part is making the noise. Im assuming its that big ass thin metal panel every manufacturer has to mount the mobo on.

What's probably rattling with your Lian Li is the PCI slot covers over your unused PCI slots. My Lian Li PC-65B would rattle the same way when I used to use a Vantec Tornado on my CPU. I solved the problem by putting a small piece of foam over the small bottom end of the slot covers so they were securely wedged against the mobo tray.

You can also get some Sorbothane to cut up and wedge between parts that might ratttle and to act as a shock absorber.

Cut your music and sub level down a little, that should up, tighten all screws up and I would try relocating your case to a better level/area.
 
the culpret for teh vibration is the side panel (not the one that gives you access to the components, rather, the other one that gives you access to basically nothing besides the scrwes ont eh other side fo your drives.) om liking the caulk idea, some silicon caulk around the edges of it, and then maybe the sock... i have my heart set on having my computer contain at least one if not a pair of socks. i kid. but seriously,this may be a stupid question, but how weldable is aluminum... if it is i could head to teh metal shop here at college and just have a friend fix this thing once and for all... wh needs that panel. thoughts/suggestions?

And NO the music is not going down if not simply because i'm ninteen and any respectable 19 year old knows that he aint turning his music down for no-one no-how. then because im caught in a circle where i've become too deaf over the years of loud music to turn it down, but am damning myself by continuing to listen to it at that level.

Then explain to me why I had to sell my PC61 because the back of the ever-so-popular flimsy ass motherboard tray was set at the wrong angle and would constantly pull my graphics card and my Audigy out of the slot?

Coming from experience, I am in full agreement with this post. Aluminum is neither sturdy, quiet, nore does it help dissipate heat. It is light and it is attractive, and nothing more.
 
Spray expanding foam in it. That will help with the rattling.
 
see what is rattling first,then make yourself a rubber gasket/strip. i took a few rubber grommets,cut them in half and and then put them on the case,then the case fans. no problems so far
 
spray expanding foam where in it? also, i have a fan that makes noise, i have the feeling some WD40 or grease of any kind would fix it but cant get at the motor to do it, any ideas on how to pop the fan part off or get grease on it?

I was kidding about the foam, sorry.


As for the fan....for almost every fan all you have to do is pull the sticker off the fan and there should be a little hole that you could drop some oil or grease into. Then pop the sticker back on. If the sticker doesn't stick back on, and sometimes they don't, just use some electrical tape over the hole.
 
some fans are not greaseable. i've had to toss a nice slot fan. took it apart and cleaned it out,still didn't work so i just threw it out.
 
if it is a side panel that is vibrating and making noise(especially the MB side) then goto a local auto parts store and get some Dynamat or goto a car audio store and ask for it there(they should have it if the autoparts store doesn't) just remove the side panel and cut the Dynamat to fit the panel and peel the backing paper off and stick it to the panel...good idea to use a roller(or rolling pin will work) and roll it from the center out to make sure you get the air bubbles out...then install the panel again and it should fix the rattle....
 
i've never seen trash talking over the internet...about cases that run over $100USD.

i've read that hard drives cause a lot of rattling, you could try some rubbery type stuff to secure everything into place.
 
does the dynamat stuff dampen internal noise as well? cause thatd be great... im trying to quiet my comp down so my roommate and i wont have the background noise.

It's got nothing to do with growing up. Of all the cases we should be critical of, I think the more expensive ones are the most important.
 
i understand that aluminum may not be the way to go,a nd will nto buy one in the future now that you guys metnion (i put my hand ont eh side next to my HDs and feel them humming... yes FEEL) but the fact of the matter is im not in teh market for a new case right now, i just threw down pretty mucha ll my cash on some new HDs and a 939 mobo/proc so im looking to fix my problems WITHOUT having to buya new case, im thinking like 20-30 dollar fixes here. any more info or a link on the dynamat stuff? it sounds good, but i seem to remember that it dampens case sound too, in whcih case thats the way im going, otherwise i think what ill do is caulk around the edges of the door and then get some rubber feet (like ones you put on the bottoms of speakers or some such thing) and place them intermittantly along the edges where the case and the door would touch and rattle.
