Ok..going to get a new SFF from a builder....heres what I configured...your thoughts?

Hmmm you have 9800+ on crossfire motherboard. That makes no sense at all, you should get 4850. And lose the XP and get Vista 64 bit.
 
My 2 cents.

1. The HSF is old and outdated, you should do better. Something in the vein of a Thermalright Ultra 90, Ultima 90 or maybe a Zalman 9500.

2. 4x1GB sticks of RAM??? You should get 2x2GB it will allow for easier overclocking.

3. You should just go with 1 larger drive, say a 640 GB Western Digital.

4. I agree with the other posters, get a HD4850 if you go with the DFI board. You can always add another HD4850 a little later for crossfire. If you configured to go with a different motherboard maybe the 9800 is worth considering.

5. Vista 64 bit all the way.

6. If you want an nvidia card consider another board too, such as the Asus P5E VM HDMI. Save a couple bucks and avoid any potential DFI headaches.
 
If you can, get the newer 320GB Caviar, they have 16MB of cache and are supposed to be faster as well. They're cheap too.
 
Is the WD 320GB drive the single platter version? Try to get one of those if it isn't, since you'd see a large performance boost with a single platter drive and the drive will run cooler too.

Also, get the GA-EP45-DS3L or an ASUS P5Q (vanilla) if you don't want to go Crossfire.
 
It's not the single platter one. The single platter one has 16MB of cache, that's what I have.
 
Really?...Vista 64?....ok dumb question..do i have to run 64 bit apps or the ones i already have will run on it...Lightroom, Photoshop?...dont want to replace them.
 
ok yes i would have to replace Photoshop, if I am reading their website correctly, it doesnt list vista 64 as being supported. So, stick with Vista?
 
You better make sure those heat sinks can fit in your case, before you buy it.

Adobe still claims Photshop will use a scratch disk that is why i have the second drive.
 
a few final comments.

Ditch the 150GB velociraptor, use the 300 GB velociraptor as your boot drive and get a 1TB drive like a samsung or a seagate or a western digital black as your secondary. Probably save a few bucks and have more storage.

Why go with 32 bit Vista, you won't be able to use all 4GB of RAM, go with 64 bit unless you have an application that cannot use 64 bit OS.

That CPU cooler is ancient. The vendor you have has to have something better.
 
I am going to get vista 64.
the second hard drive is for a photoshop scratch drive not storage.
 
I see, but a 1 TB drive, like the Samsung will be nearly as fast and you can use it for other things (nsfw media storage ;)) too.
