Hey guys,

i've been thinking about buying the 74gb raptor, but i wanted your impressions of the quality. I currently only user seagate cuz they are top quality

how about the raptors?

when accessing/writing to the drive, do the raptors make that loud noise that make it sound like its going to break or like someone is eating tortilla chips? i had a caviar way back when that sounded like that to me

also, how much more performance am i really looking at while play games like counter strike source of fear?

also, what about the heat of the drive

i've read reviews and i'm hearing good and bad on all parts of this dirve, so i just wanted your guys' opinion

TIA

A) "Let's get ready to rumble" is the tag line I'd like to use when telling people what to expect noise-wise when getting a Raptor, as its seek noise is a deep SCSI like rumble rather than a chirp/chatter like you get from a modern 7200RPM drive. I find that noise quite satisfying personally, but I can understand why many people wouldn't like it.

B) Stepping up from a Seagate Barracuda? I'd expect a performance boost of around 30-40%.

C) The Raptor actually runs very cool, cooler than a Maxtor 7200RPM drive.

D) Reliability? WD stands behind the drive for five years just like Seagate does with their drives. Any guess at reliability beyond that is merely specualtion.

I don't notice any more noise from my 74gb Raptor than from my 200gb Seagates. It is noticeably faster in booting up. "Wow" fast!

thanks for that info, in regards to A...

so the noise is more of a deeper sound that higher pitch right? If it follows the convention of quiet fans, than i think the raptor might be easier on your ears. i hate the vantec stealth fans, because of the high pitch noise they make, i like silenx because the noise they make is a lower pitch

raptors are very torquey

in performance and noise. I run two, love them to death. Very fast reads and writes. 2 scrolls on the xp boot bar, and thats that.

Using Raptors, without my raid adapter plugged in, 15 seconds from power on to login.

With the adapter plugged in, 30 seconds from boot to login.

I wish there were a SocketA board that has a PCI-X slot.

15 seconds is nice. Wish that was my case :p (buy the 74gb raptor, to make that come true?)
Yeah, i get around 30 seconds from boot to login aswell.. with my 36gb raptor.

My 36 is a tad noisy.. but it's weird I took it out and then plugged it back in and it's so much quieter now. Kinda sounds like the old hard drives... not so bad but when you cant hear the reg SATA it does get a tad annoying. They are faster, I believe, by a nice amount vs my SATA' but I wish I would've read DOUGLITE' forum b4 I bought the 36. He seems to really know his stuff. Nevertheless the 74 was very pricey at the time.

Also, it's a bit faster than the 36.

I've got 2 36GB ones on a Raid and I get 3 and a half scrolls on bootup. (It went from 1 1/2 until I installed ATI Video drivers)

I love them! I won't build another box without them as I have a file server and don't need more than 70GB on my "gaming box".

I have the standard "Antec" case that I got with my built in Koolance cooling and they are not louder than the fans on that so I don't hear the drives.

This is true,

People say "36gb raptors are a waste of money, just get a 7200RPM drive"

I wish i had the 74gb raptor :(

from what i've seen - the 74gb is fast enough that running two of them in raid0 is a waste... it produces more noise and heat then any speed benefits - and you actually compromise your data more.

Uh, I don't think you'll find a lot of Raid 0 fans around here. :p Well this thread tipped the balance for me, I've been wanting one for awhile. I'm going to go hit up the FS/FT forums and see if anybody wants to swap a Retail AIW9800Pro for one.

Certainly not at the top :D Looks like my crusade to spread the Truth about RAID is finally starting to pay off :p Now I'm attempting the impossible - changing the culture in Video Cards  It's nice to come back to Disk Storage Land ;)

Seriously, Alphakry is really close to the truth. How come he can say in one sentence what it takes me a whole thread to say? Rats, out of smilies.

If you want fast boot / load times over all - get the raptor

i owned a 74g and it was fantastic!

Now, if you do alot of large file transfers - then get a good SATAII drive with NCQ' - Raptors tend to not perform as great with long large file transfers

but the quick, smaller read / writes are just AWSOME!

Heh, heh. I only get the xp 64 blue scroll bar for a split second. Not even half on my AMD3k+. Guess having oc'ed to 2.4 helps. I could just picture if I had the 74 Rap. :D
