i just purchased a 150gb raptor x and its abit loud... is the one without the window quieter?

I had the Raptor X for a week and had to return it because of the "clunk clunk clunk" racket. Now I have the WD 750 AAKS and its fast and quiet (223 mb burst speed, 78 MB avg. read). No more Raptors for me,

The WD7500AAKS actually beats the Raptor either slightly or quite a bit in every area except for the following:

-seek time
-IOPS
-loading of levels (sometimes)

...but if you read STR (sequential transfer rate) results or any other benchmark, you'll see the WD7500AAKS (and the new RE2 version of that drive) come out as being faster.

O... RLY?

Raptor comes ahead in just about everything. Where are you getting your numbers from?

Am I supposed to respond with "ya rly"?

Raptor does have the advantage with 10000 RPM, and we can see that logically, the few tests where it does do better, it should do better as a result of that RPM, but the one huge advantage which pushes the WD7500AAKS over the top, in my opinion, when compared to the Raptor, is simply the platter density. With a platter size of 188 GB / platter compared to the Raptor's 75 GB / platter, there are some major improvements to be had.

Platter density does pay a big factor in this. It doesnt matter if the spindle is spinning at 10,000 RPM, if there are few bits : surface area ratio, a higher density and a lower spindle speed will trump it. Raptors are faster, in certain, specific applications. Just because theyre ranked as one of the fastest, most (more?) affordable drives, doesnt make it faster for every single application.

Access times do wonders for the snappiness (feel, experience) I'll stick with RPM over density.

Too bad there wasn't a WD750ADFD out. Get 3 of those in RAID0 and you'd be SMOKIN'.

Maybe not 750's but bigger,faster Raptors,with larger caches,are coming soon.Check Anandtech ! :D

...another person that thinks RAID0 is the end all to benchmarks...

Im happy with my raptor x. I use it as my OS drive and have most of my other files and documents on other larger drives.

The noise is not enough to bug me, it is much less annoying than load fans or optical drives IMO.

Sorry for highjacking but, is it common to have a small imperfection on the raptor x disk. I got mine in a bit earlier than my other parts and it looks awesome but there is a teeny tiny little shiny speck on the platter, it doesnt move around its just there, is that common or should i call the big WD

Without being aware of what it actually is, I think it would be foolish to do perform any non-inquisitive action, but since inquisitive action is what you were going to do anyways, go ahead and ask.

WD has so far been of zero help concerning diamond specs on the HD, I wish someone that owned one could say whethere thiers was perfect or it had a few little diamond like imperfections on the platter.

At some point a phone call is in order
