Raptor X noise?

I just got a new Raptor X. I have heard that they do make a bit of noise, like a whirring or a hum, but are they supposed to make a lot of noise when loading? Like I can hear the head(?) moving back and forth. Its kinda concerning. I thought a brand new HDD would be silent. I assumed it would make a bit of noise from spinning so fast, but should the arm/head/whatever be so loud? I mean, it isn't quite a clicking, like when the HDD is about to croak (I hope), but it is definitely audible. And this is in my Antec 900 with 3x120mm ACRyan fans, that I would guess have to be at least 35-40Dba, and a Zalman 9500 AM2 which is medium-loud. Any Raptor (X) owners please answer so I know if I need to RMA this thing. Thanks in advance.

Raptors done whine from spindle speed, but when seeking you will definately know by the lovely grinding it makes. If you can't bear it, time to start looking for a replacement. Rubber mounting may help a little.

The seeking noise is normal. Raptors are fast, no complaints about the seek noise here :)

Is the noise due to vibrations transmited to the case or the drive itself is noisy... If it's only vibrations transmitted, rubber band(or elastic) mounted drive will be dead silent.

Well, I am glad to hear its not abnormal, and I am dissappointed to hear that its not abnormal..lol I heard a lot of people say that they were loud, but never anything about the grinding sound. Funny, grinding was the first word that came to mind, but I didn't want to use that to describe it, because I thought surely everyone would tell me it is trashed. As it is not that bothersome to me. As far as the rubber mounting, I have an Antec 900, and the HDD cages are hard enough to just get the regular screws in, let alone rubber mounts. I can try, though. It probably wouldn't be a good idea to put it inside a enclsure would it? Unless it was watercooled? Raptors need good airflow on them, correct?

No, it is not vibration. It is definitely coming from the drive itself. I have seen people mount their Raptors like this. Great solution unless you move it around alot.

Mounted my Raptor on rubber grommets to a drive sled in my Sonata II case. Sound isn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I can just barely hear it in seek patterns, but its really not that noticeable to me. Its certainly louder than my 2500KS, which is dead silent, but like I said its not really noticeable to me

I've installed a few Raptor X 150 GB versions, and all honesty I found them to be quite bearable. I don't find them that loud at all, if anything quieter than some of the early-mid generation 7200 RPM drives.

Of course comparing to current generation Caviar's and Baracuda's they are louder, but factor in an average CPU or GPU fan it's not bad at all.

It was loud at first, then you get used to it, and now all is good :)

I actually notice my secondary drives (200gb and 160gb 7200RPM SATA) more than my Raptor X now as they have distinguishable sounds and I am used to the Raptor's sound

If you hold the Raptor X in your hand you will hear the "grinding" sound of the RW heads. You can't get rid of the sound entirely but mounting the drive differently might help prevent transmission into the chassis of the case.

Raptors are loud, but the Raptor X is even louder. About 10dba(taken from benchmarks and test). If you have the choice between a normal Raptor 150gig or the Raptor X 150gig always choose the normal version...The only difference is the window(block less sound than the normal casing i guess).

IMO why a window in first place??? Even if you can see in your computer i'm betting you cannot see the top of the HDD since it's in a rack ;)

I just watched this video this morning becaue I'm thinking about getting a Raptor x for my new build. Then I came across this thread and figure I'd share it since you can hear how loud the drive is in the video.

Actually, in my new build I will be able to see the drive from outside the case. I'm planning on getting an X-Qpack, which has a window right where the hard drives mount. The case will be sitting on my left. So I'll be able to see the drive from my chair. :D
