So what really. The Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD7500AAKS 750GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive costs under 200, has 5 times the capacity and performance is mostly better than raptor's. Check through this review and you'll know what I'm talking about. I won't even mention noise levels.

Yea, I have a pair of ADFD raptors and there damm fast... the spindle noise is no more than any other drive, but the seek noise is horrid! the clicking drives me nuts!

I just read that review, the raptor is still faster in almost all benches.. just a hair faster mind you.

Did you actually go through ALL the benchmarks? I went through all of them and this is what I counted: Raptor won 12. WD7500AAKS won 20. And this is excluding noise levels and power consumption. Many of the raptor's wins were in benchmarks that didn't really make any difference between all drives in the first place. (Almost within margin of error). Just look at the first ~10 benchmarks. Hardly any difference between the drives. But in benchmarks where the WD7500AAKS wins, it really wins by quite a bit. I'd definitely chose the WD7500AAKS over Raptor. Raptor had it's time, now it's seriously losing any advantage it might have had in the past.

The Raptor 150GB is still better. The only drive that is faster right now is the 1TB Hitachi and that has its downsides. A 150GB Raptor is around $150 right now and for a system drive it is plenty. A Hitachi 7k1000 is much more than that. Even though it has alot of capacity if you run everything off of it it will be slower. However as just a system drive it seems like a huge waste.

p.s. The Techreport's review is seriously messed up. There is like a 2 second difference between the ADFD and Raptor X in system boot. Also a 7200.7 beats the Raptor X. Not to mention the WD740GD beats them all. If it was the WD740ADFD I can probably believe it but the WD740GD...
