raptor vs maxator 16mb buffer

i was just wondering what would be the better drive to get; a 74gig raptor at a price of $203.70 or a 300gig maxator sata ultra 16 for $160.65? the raptor has the performance edge but the maxator has the better price, i'm not concerned with storage space as i don't use much and i have a pair of 80gig drives i'm using now should i fill one up. so what i'm basicly asking is is the performance edge that the raptor provides worth the extra cost, the 16 mb buffer on the maxator makes it the second fastest drive i know of but how much slower is it?
 
I have a raptor now, and I'm not too impressed with it. It replaced my 160 gig 8mb buffer WD as my boot drive. Yeah, it's a little faster, but definitely not worth the price. I would say a 300 gig drive with a 16 meg buffer would serve you a lot better and probably be a hell of a lot quieter.
 
agreed with above. I went from a 200gb 8mb cache to a 74gb raptor. While I do notice a difference in speed, it was not big enough to look over the performance/gb,price ratio.
But it serves me well because I use it as a system drive and where I install all of my games.
 
I have 2 36Gb raptors in raid 0and it is fast, it is the fastest computer i have used yet.
And they are virtually silent,you can hear any hard drive noise at all.
 
^^ MLIII/DM10 are pretty close to equal in performance with WD360GD. The only test suite the WD360GD wins over a 16MB Maxtor drive is Gaming, by an imperceptible 1 IO/sec (less than 0.2%). The Maxtor wins Office by a similarly small (less than 1%) margin. However, in High-End and Bootup, the Maxtor 16MB drives are able to build a significant lead, with a 6% and 38% :eek: lead respectively. WD360GD looks ok, until you consider that it has the highest cost per GB of any ATA drive in production. High cost per GB should deliver untouchable performance like WD740GD does, not merely equal to a best in class 7200RPM drive. WD needs to go back to the drawing board on WD360GD - port down the 73GB's firmware, motor, and bearings. They also need to get the cost under control. WD360GD has significant drawbacks, and it will remain not recommended until these drawbacks are addressed. A 16MB Maxtor drive gets you equal or better performance than WD360GD, a comparable heat/noise profile - for a quarter of the cost/GB.

Unfortuantely, WD doesn't have to improve WD360GD - 10,000RPM and 5.0ms will continue to sell without real world performance to backup those figures.
 
Get the raptor. You should be able to find it for sub 200 I would think. I too didnt think it would be worth the cost but I am very happy I decided with the raptors.

Considering you claim to have yours in RAID-0, which has a negative impact on many things, including Windows boot time, I think the OP ought to ignore your opinion.

Maxtor's 16MB drives are much better than their 8MB drives. DiamondMax10 is an across the board improvement from DiamondMax Plus 9.
