I just want to make if I need a SATA-II controller or not. I have SATA ports on my mainboard but do the 74gig Rators require SATA-II ports? My mainboard is a Epox 8HDA5+ with the following:

S-ATA RAID:
Two S-ATA ports from VT8237 with up to 150MBps bandwidth
Four S-ATA ports from Silicon Image Sil-3114 with up to 150MBps bandwidth and RAID 0, 1, 10, 5 support for mass storage fault tolerance (EP-8HDA5+ only)


Am I set or do I need to purchase the controller?
 
You should be fine. SATA II drives can run at SATA I speeds to the best of my knowledge, and I'm not sure that they even are SATA II drives... maybe I haven't done my research properly, but I just purchased a 74GB Raptor and it runs fine with my Biostar TForce4 AM2 board.
 
how about you plug it in and see if it works? I guarentee it shouldn't hurt anything.

You'll be fine.

The SATA-IO mandates backwards compatibility with all SATA devices. If you mix devices, and either drive or host doesn't support a given feature (NCQ, 3gbps etc) that feature is simply disabled and life goes on.

And one more thing. From a picture, I saw that the drive can be connected to the power with a 4 pin molex. Am I better off using a SATA power cable or a 4 pin molex?
 
Either or, not both. The Molex is less likely to fall out if you move the rig frequently. The 15pin SATA is required for hot swap.
 
what douglite said. I've personally never had a power (or signal) cable fall out during transport though. If you have SATA power cables, use them. If you are out of them, makes it easy.
