I've got two 36GB raptors. One is 8MB cache, the other is 16MB.

HEre's the question...

Which one for Boot Drive, which one for the game drive? Is the larger cache gonna affect games more, or is it going to effect XP more, or which one won't even benefit at all?

I wanna get this resolved by tonight because I wanna finish it all tonight. Suggestions are helpful!

OR.....

Should I just run them in RAID 0?

RAID 0 is not going to help in the long run, unfortunately. With the mismatched cache sizes you'll notice a decrease in performance to some degree, but RAID 0 is just overly hyped too much as it is and doesn't live up to what most people think it should give them for performance.

Raptors are fast enough as it is. I'd use the 16MB model as the system drive (the increased cached theoretically will help when dealing with booting the PC and getting applications loaded quicker as well as common tasks), and then use the 8MB model as a storage/game/data drive.

Hope this helps...

well i have 2x500GB 7200.10s for data

i need sometihng for the games I play

CS source and BF2 and FEAR

Keep the 16MB cache drive, sell the other. The firmware and STR speeds are much better on the new drive.

I'd say keep both only because 36GB is probably too small for the OS and all applications plus reserved space for defragging and page files. Sure you can install some apps on the data drive but that's not so clean.

Also for the sole purpose of getting a single usable partition of about 60-70GB I think RAID-0 or JBOD is a good idea. Its probably easier to work with than a 36-36 split. The chance of data loss goes up but it's still rare enough and the OS and apps drive shouldn't be holding any data that can't be recovered by a reinstall anyway.

I know 14 people that have had Raptors simply die right in the middle of whatever they were doing, and in several of those 14 cases it was relatively valuable data and costly when it vanished like a fart in the wind. Could be one of the reasons I've never bothered to get one: too many customers of mine that want the performance and then end up finding out that the trouble the drives are worth is quite higher than the actual dollar cost they paid to get 'em.

Just offering up the info... :)

I only run about 3-4 games and the rest is all data.

So here's what I'm thinking...

16MB cache drive - Windoze XP and mostly used progz (mozilla, ableton, final cut, photoshop, CS source)

8mb cache drive - Games

2x500GB and the 2x200GB = HD MOVIES Woot!

thanks for the suggestions guys. I think this is gonna rock...

what he said ^

otherwise... how many games do you need installed that you couldnt have windows and games on the 16mb cache one?
