when i built the machine i'm currently running i originally had ordered two raptor 36GB drives - and was too annoyed by the whine they produced, so i returned them after a couple of days. ok, they were brand new back then, and i read in later reviews of the 74GB drives that they come with a fluid bearing that got rid of the high pitched whine associated with the earlier 36GB ones.
however, i still don't have the cash for the 74GB drive and was considering the smaller brother for swapfile, OS and temp-files (for a rig i'm putting together for a friend ) - *IF* it doesn't have that high-pitched whine anymore. does any of you know if they are still manufacturing the smaller drives the old way or like the quiter 74GB siblings?
 
I should have a 36GB Raptor arriving via FedEx on Thursday. I will let ya know about noise.
 
I have two, and I certainly wouldn't call either of them loud. The are quiet, and fast. I have each one in a separate computer.
 
I run a pair in my system ( non-raid) and The only time I hear them is under HEAVY disk IO like booting and defragging.
 
hmmmm, that's exactly what i read before i bought mine. it's not that the drive was loud in any way, but the was this high-pitched whine to them that i knew of SCSI-drives only. so while beeing 'quiet' when accessing data (no clicking and such) it was the whine that made me go nuts.

damn, i think i need to go some place and listen to a new 36GB drive. pls tell me what you think DemisE, ok?

FedEx was early, going to go pick it up now. Will post results in a few hours. :)
 
Drive is very quiet and very fast. It is no louder than the WD 7200RPM 40GB I had in there previously.
 
I had 2 36gb raptors, cooled by a 80mm fan. They were VERY loud. The squealing and clicking drove me mad, so I sold them and got a 160gb Seagate. Some are loud, some are not.
 
Yes, they still have it. Some people notice it more than others. It's like how some monitors/TVs whine... Some people can't hear it, some people (like ME) find the sound EXTREMELY painful.
 
Mine are only loud when they first start up from a TURNED OFF state for a few mins.

By loud, I mean that high pitch whine noise, but it does go away, and after that their basically noiseless after they spin up, and when their in use they make normal HD read/writing sounds but their not loud.

I'm totally happy with the way they are, as I have my computer on 24/7 so their almost never loud.
