Raptor and Vista

Hi Guys

I've heard Vista uses the HDD quite alot, compared to Windows Xp.
Vista uses idle time to deframent hdd and indexing and generally using the disk more when in idle compared to XP.
Any experience around this? Since I've heard the seek & load times are quite loud on the Raptor and I always have my PC turned on in my livingroom and would the Raptor be annoying loud when vista is installed and using the Raptor?

Any comments would be appreciated from members using Vista and a Raptor HDD.

From what I understand after some initial optimization of the HDD layout, Vista will access the HDD as (in-)frequently as XP.

I've noticed no extra activity or harrasing sound. Depends how quiet your room is, if harddrive noise drives you up the wall, then you should look at an enclosure or another drive perhaps that might be more suitable.

When I initially installed Vista, I have noticed frequent disk crunching even well after the OS has finished booting. It seems to be less frequent this week, so perhaps the optimization activity is nearing completion. Other than that, there doesn't seem to be any noticable affect to performance. The OS is still as responsive as always when this is going on and it doesn't seem to have a noticable affect on the time to load applications. But all Raptor owners should know what they are getting into when these disks churn... ;)

Vista does appear to use the drive a lot more than XP, it monitors your application usage and once it has a pattern of what you do from day to day it can predict what you're likely to load an when, and so does a lot of pre-loading files into the pagefile and even on flash drives if you have them plugged in.

I'm running Vista off my RAID 0 array which is 2 x 36Gb Raptors, it's very fast.

When Vista is first installed, it starts indexing your disk at some point, which makes the drives starting running making noise at random times. Bugged me a little bit the first few days I had it installed since my pc is in my dorm room, but after 2 or 3 days it stopped. I haven't heard my drives going crazy randomly for awhile in Vista. But the speed increase is definately worth a couple days of noise.
