I plan on purchasing a 150GB raptor, but Im unsure if it's the right choice. I will be getting another drive to use for storage and to redirect My Documents to it to leave space on the raptor. Right now I'm only using about 70GB on a 250GB drive. Is the 150 noticeably faster than a 74GB? Or a good 7200.10 or 7200.9 drive? I'm a very active gamer if that makes any difference.

my 36 gig raptor is pure secks compared to my 320 7200.10 drive, as far as boot drives goes. Once I installed windows on my raptor and then on the 320, I was a raptor fan for life. All that and the 74 and 150 are supposed to be faster! 10k all the way.

I felt the 150 gig raptor was worth it. I do video editing and some gaming. It is slightly faster then the 74 gig in benchmarks. I never had a 74 gig raptor so can't compare the two. My previous system had a u160 10k rpm scsi drive so I do like the access speed. 74 gig just seems a little too small considering if you have alot of programs and you want some space on the drive cause the drive acesses slower as you fill it up.

i agree with you that once you've used a Raptor, you usually wont want to go back to 7200rpm hdds.

So, from now on, I've decided my main rig will just run on a Raptor or SCSI. For datas, it'll be shared on Gigabit connection to a file server which is power-efficient and using mobile CPU. I'm now contemplating on using CF or Microdrives to run the OS for the file server.

Alright thanks guys. Looks like I will choose the 150GB. It will give me more bragging rights too.

If you need the 150 for the space, get it, otherwise there really isn't a performance difference with any of the new models and you could save some money by buying a smaller drive if it fits your needs. Typical low-level benchmarks show they all perform equally.

if you want performance, you might want to get 2 x 36gb WD360ADFD and use Raid 0.

It might be cheaper and offer better performance than a single WD1500ADFD.

I'm thinking of buying a 150gig raptor also. Is there any other non-scsi hard drive on the market that is close to performance of the 150 raptor?

My next build will be 3 x 150GB raptors in RAID5 for redundancy AND performance.

I have one 150GB raptor right now, and I wouldn't use anything else for my OS/Games drive.

I think I'm going to order one, hopefully it beats out this maxtor ata hard drive I have currently installed.

Its awesome, I love my Raptor X (150gb) drive.

I dual boot off of it and it is amazing. Works great if you have a large drive in addition to it to dump files on (i have a 200gb HDD to dump stuff on).

One of the best things you can do to add performance to your PC IMO.

I take the opposite view. I use to run 10k and 15k scsi hard drives, and the difference between 7200rpm drives is soo meaningless. I find actual storage space far more valuable, esp if you play a lot of games, and have large itunes episode. space>speed in my opinion when comparing desktop 7200rpm to 10k rpm drives.

Well this isn't comforting after I Just ordered my Raptor 150 drive today :) . I'm hoping for a slightly quicker computer, and I'll have 2nd drives. I"m assuming that a fast hard drive will make applications etc. pop up slightly faster, which will give my computer a better feel to it.

The raptors are awesome, but know how to use them....

I run a single 150gb raptor with a 200gb WD for storage and a 160gb Seagate for Music/Videos.

Just put os, games and programs on the 150gb Raptor and you will have no issues at all. I even have a dual boot on my 150gb Raptor and still tons of space even though there are games and many programs on each OS install on the same drive :)

And games? Are you kidding me, the raptor is the BEST for games. I used to get in fairly quick to the servers in BF2 and BF2142, but now I am always the first on the map thanks to my raptor :)

You won't be disappointed.

I basically do the same. Just make sure you defrag the damn thing!
All that performance goes down the shitter if it's all fragmented.

I just a raptor for my os/apps/games and a second for my downloads/mp3s/vids/misc :D cant imagine using anything else :D

I find more ram is much noticable in most games than a fast hard drive.

<3 my Raptors... but I am thinking about ditching the Raid 0
You'll miss it after you ditch it.:p I again broke up my RAID0 array this past weekend and did on OS install on one and progrom install on the other. After the bootup took almost 10 seconds longer, I said why brother testing further and just imaged back to RAID0.

I concur with others, when the raptor150 came out on the market, I was very hesitant, but I went ahead and bought a single Raptor150, It was one of the best investments ever, I cannot go back to 7200rpm drives. Did everyone here who has Raptor150 disable NCQ as it reduces performance in single app/user environment?

I did not disable it as I am unaware that WD even had that feature. I thought that was limited to Seagate. No?
