does a harddrive like the new raptor 150 needs any kind of special cooling? does anyone have one?

2. does anyone know, is a new 500gb hd just as fast the new 150 raptor?
 
1) I have 2 of the 150's..havent put them in yet..I have 2 of the 74's in my system now....I have them cooled with 2 80MM fans blowing right over them......Do you need to cool them? Not sure...should you cool them?? definitly...

I dont know about the 2nd question. but I doubt any other HD is as fast as the new Raptor....:)
 
from this "one" post i have decided not to buy the raptor 150. i have a 7200 rpm drive that gets hot a lot, buying a new one that gets even hotter is not wise i think. thanks!

Thats really not good logic. You need to do some research about the thermal properties. Its probably not that much hotter than a 7200rpm. Either way, if your hard drive gets dangerously hot, then you need to fix the cooling issues. If it is in the danger zone, then *not* adding another drive will not fix the issue.

If you are concerned about drive heat, increase the airflow around them and then buy the new drive.
 
What? People presuming that high spindle speed automatically equals high thermal dissipation?

WRONG

Clicky, scroll to the bottom, look at the environmental scores, and note that the WD1500ADFD delivers better environmental performance in ALL of SR's thermal measures than the two compared 7200RPM drives, the MaxLine III and DeskStar 7K500. Yes WD, Seagate, Samsung, and modest Hitachi 7200RPM drives will all run cooler than the WD1500ADFD, but not much cooler. WD's engineers have done a great job of keeping the WD1500ADFD's thermal perfromance competitive with 7200RPM drives. Heck, it even beats the 7K500 on idle noise.

The WD1500ADFD has some advantages, most notably that it is a pretty unassuming two platter drive, benefits from FDB motors, and the best hardware WD can put in a drive.

As has been stated, you need to look at your case cooling....My 74's dont get hot..I dont let them..maybe more fans are in your future..:)
 
I have a Raptor 150 in a Dell GX620 and it is too hot to touch.

It is running hot even in a Zalman heat pipe. I am trying to find out ways to cool it better- there is not alot of room.
 
I can't wait to fire mine up this afternoon. It is on the Fedex truck for delivery. :cool:
 
i have 2 of the 36GB ones and they never get that hot that you cant touch, i will be getting a pair of 150GBs for my Summer build :)
