I'm doing a water cooling gaming rig, and I'm wonderin ghow loud are the Raptor Drives in comparison to regular 7200 RPM SATA drives?

Also I could get 500 gigs instead of 150 gig for less money with getting normal SATA drives, so is the performance difference worth it for a gamer?

Anyone?

I'd hate to pay premium for a loud HD that I will not notice much of a difference with...

Not sure why my thread got moved to this forum where no1 wil answer it...Its more general Hardware than a storage system question...

I mean a single drive is not really a storage system.

Anything involving computer drives is a storage subsystem. It's small portion of the overall system, aka a subsystem.

The problem with your question is noise level is subjective. I have 2x10k rpm scsi drives, 1xraptor, 2xcpu fans, 3x80MM case fans, 1x90mm case fan, 2x120mm case fans. Compare to all that, my raptor is dead silent. I don't even hear it run.

Others complain that the seek noises of raptors is incredibly loud and it bothers them. If you take the time to accoustically isolate your raptor from the case, it should be virtually silent, if you bolt it into a steel frame case with no vibration dampening, it'll probably be noisy as hell.

You will find answers you like to your question and you find answers you don't for the exact same question.

My system will be all watercooled.

ALL 120mm silent fans (will probably replace stocker with L1A's..Even my liberty PSU has 120 in it.

Only other drives I have used recently are IDE WD 8 meg buffer drives.....

I was really thinking I should get a raptor for windows and apps and maybe a 250 gig drive later for storage?

It's quite a bit more money...

For example...Would the extra $200 for the raptor 150 be better invested in a GTX instead of a GT? Or not necessarily?

Alot of it is personal preference. I wouldnt go total overkill on a video card unless you are a videophile. The system in my sig, including an mx518 and a top of the line NEC burner costed me 650 including shipping. I went to my friends house and played on his SLI dual 7800gtxs and there is no difference of graphics to me what so ever. If you really need the extreme load times of the Raptor X, then go for it, it is a performance drive. Ive got 2 120mm fans and 1 80mm case fan, and when I play games, I do not notice it one bit, and only as I am typing alone I can hear my fans only. So my question to you is do you really think its worth it? or just buying a raptor74gig for OS/apps and another 250gig for storage be a better solution?

Price/gig wise it's similarly priced to the 74gb raptor right now. While it is faster, I find myself hesistant to upgrade because I don't see myself using the extra storage space on my system drive. Spending more than $200 on any single drive is hard for me to justify

well since the 74 gig definately will not hold all my applications...it would have to be a 150, then again can definately see differneces when it comes to faster video cards, but first you have to turn them up pretty high! And turn on AA, course you will also be limited by the game itself.

if I had 74's I would not upgrade either, but since I have NOTHING, just want to figure out what to get, It's the last piece of my system to order!

I just bought a 7800 GT and Low Profile Maze4 to ensure that the video card would be silent, so I don't wanna blow it and get a drive thats too noisy...however it does not seem that people think it is significantly louder than any other HD.

It would be mounted in a CM Stacker Hard Drive bay.
