I got my hard Drive from FedEx today, it was supposed to be a raptor 150, but I have no idea what it is because im afraid to open the box.

The box looks like it fell off the roof, one of the corners is all smashed in.

The blow to the box broke some of the tape and it looks like it was just packed with peanuts...but I don't know if I should even open it up to find out...

I ordered it from ZipZoomFly, after reading the sticky...but now I think I shoul dhave ordered it from NewEgg..., should I go find a fedex station tomarrow and send it back without opening it?

ZZF packages HDD in a styrofoam insert, its pretty tight around the drive, which is in an anti static bag. The whole thing is packed in peanuts. I just got a drive from ZZF yesterday, there packing methods are good. As long as the styrofoam packing isn't severly damaged I'd say it sould be alright.

Really I thought any impact to a HD would destroy them...Although I do believed they are in parked mode for shipping.

Open the package and check it out, if the drive is dead you can always give ZZF a call. But like I said they pack them pretty well.

Its specced for, Shock
Operating Shock (Read) 65G, 2 ms
Non-operating Shock 250G, 2 ms

250Gs over 2ms requires lot of force

Take a pic of the box before opening, Open it up test it out see if its fine If it works and seems like no problems keep it.. :)

ok I took a pic then I opened it up, it looks ok...

I won't be able to test it for another week though...Building a new PC and still need a processorOld PC does not have SATA

Should be fine, just make sure you try it in something before you can't return it to ZZF anymore, so you don't have to RMA to the manufacturer.

I would send ZZF an email to their customer service and at least let them know what had happened. Just in case there is a problem, you have a paper trail.

You may not need to, but it is safer to err on the side of caution.

I have dealt with ZZF dozens of times and have never had any problems with their orders or their customer service. They have been top notch.

Had you ordered it from Newegg it would probably be DOA with their poor packaging of drives. ZZF packs them right in case of a rough ride.

Yes Good idea,

To the OP do this so if it is dead. and you try to rma they wont be like why did u wait so long.. :)

The entire point of having the packing material is so that it gets destroyed instead of what's inside ;) The drive may not have even experienced much of a shock at all - it may have been jammed in a slide, the box may have been shredded by a belt, etc. Also, tdg is right about Newegg. They both use FedEx (although the Egg defaults to UPS now), and the foam shells that ZZF uses for their drive shipments do a much better job of protectign the drive from travel hazards.

Also, even if the drive is toast, you can (provided you have access to a credit/debit card) do an advance RMA with WD and get a new drive in less than 72 hours, then ship the DoA one back to WD in the box the replacement comes in.

Whats all this talk about foam shells and ZZF?

The last time I orered HD's from ZZF, which was last month, all four came packed the same way Newegg packs them, wrapped in bubble wrap and an anti-static bag.

Every single one of my drives (ordered over 30 from them already) came in foam cocoons.

And that's if it is unprotected, not encased in awesome foam. Drive should be fine...

Less than you think...about equivalent to an 12-18 inch drop onto concrete. Still, the drive packing does a huge amount to spread out that impulse acceleration.

Dropping the bare drive from a a height of one meter on to a rigid surface would exert about ~630Gs on the drive, but its in packing material. The foam shell, the box, the peanuts increases the stopping time, which decreases the accelleration and thus the force.

Odd, I calculated 530g, assuming a 2ms semi-elastic collision, and a half-sine shock pulse. What parameters did you use?

1ms stop time, I was just ballparking figures I didn't calculate it all the way out.

Every drive I have every received from Newegg comes with foam shells, bubble wrap, and an anti-static bag.

Every drive I've got from Newegg was either in a clear plastic shell or in a static bag with bubble wrap. The Western Digital RE2 I just bought from ZZF a couple of weeks ago came with a full foam shell, with peanuts in a Fedex box. The first thing I thought to myself was "nice pack job". It was by far the best non-retail packaging of a drive I've seen from an online vendor. Newegg usually ships things floating about in a box with some popcorn and bubble wrap depending on the item. I've never received anythign damaged from Newegg, but then again I'm only 450 miles from their warehouse in CA.

Oof, that would put it over 1,000 g's....thats why the surface is so important. Even the difference between a fall onto wood vs. concrete can be significant.

Excellent advice. This is exactly what I did when I received my WD2500KS from ZZF. One end of the box was smashed in. I sent them an email giving them a heads up. They replied that all I needed to do was let them know after testing the drive.

It's still alive and well to this day. Good stuff.

I've always received them in foam shells. Are you sure you're thinking of the right ZZF here?

I live less than 30 miles from NewEgg warehouse so nothing is damaged lol. I tried to pick up one of my orders because I was so anxious, but no go there.

i receved my WD2500KS with an esd bag wrapped in bubble wrap in some sort of box in pakcing peatnuts, it got to me allright but im not sure if thats the best way to ship things since the manufacturer wouldnt take it back like that

All of the drives I've ordered from the Egg have come like others stated, in an antistatic bag, encased in bubble wrap and buried in a sea of peanuts. Not a single dead one yet. The drive's probably fine.

I ordered 2 Raptor 74's from the Egg. Bubble wrapped and peanuts. One of the drives makes a clicking sound when moving it around. Doesn't sound good. Sounds like something has broken inside the drive. I'm not going to even test it. Once it spins up there's no telling what would happen. I've already RMA'd to Newegg, ordered another and will ship the DOA on Monday. What's the diff between DOA and Defective/Damaged?

I had 2 36 GIG Raptors come damaged from ZZF.... This was about 2 years ago...They were packed like SHIT!!!!! ..and niether one worked......They gave me such a hard time returning them, , they got them back and said they were damaged...No kidding, thats why I sent them back sherlock...tried to blame me, I finaly had to do a credit card chargeback because they were trying so hard to screw me, I could feel my ass starting to stretch.......

I guess my point is, everyone has different experiences with online retailers.....I use the Egg now, never had a problem, but I know its only a matter of time :)
