So I get my new Raptor 150 in today from Zipzoomfly. I plug it in and everything seems peachy, I format the disk and everything completes normally. Then it gets a delay write error, I try copying files and the error comes again. Finally the drive just disappears.

I restart the computer and now the motherboard won't detect the drive no matter what power source/sata port. It doesn't even spin up :(

How is ZZF's RMA service?
 
uhh wont spin huh. hmmm power??? :rolleyes: plug in a seperate hd. check your voltages, for that matter check to make sure your powercables are contacting.

I tried all my SATA power ports and even tried the molex. My other 4 drives don't have a problem. I even tried with just the raptor and only one other drive.
 
other FOUR drives? are they reaptors too? comon dude check the voltages, thats a power hungry machine you got

No, they're a Maxtor Maxline III 250, Maxline II 250, Hitachi 80GB, and WD 160GB. Should I bring out my multimeter? How does one check the voltages?
 
hmmm, mighty strange, pc wizard reports my +3.3V voltage to be 3.2, my +5V voltage at 5.04, then my +12V at 12.83V!

Looks like this could be a problem.
 
Just plug the meter into an unused molex. Red=+5, Yellow=+12, both Black=ground. Should be within 5% at most. Then head over to the PSU forum and check out the stickies to find out what to replace it with if necessary.

I can't find my damn multimeter now. I know it's just plugging one end on the ground and the other on the +5/+12 while full loading the computer (I'm computer engineering so I hope I know at least this much). While the multimeter is MIA, I'm going to try the drive in a friend's computer with the same motherboard. If still no dice then I know I'll have to RMA the drive, but I still can't rule out that the PSU killed it.

I'm a bit skeptical though since all of my other drives work well, and I've had another power hungry drive plugged in before (making 5 drives total) with no problems. Also, I was formatting the drive using disk management, I only noticed the read errors after the format had completed. Then the drive disappeared, so it may very well have been having read errors all along and have been defective.
 
Maybe your drive got bumped during shipping...crap like that seem to happen all the time. :(
 
I just got my Raptor 150 today and tried to boot it up with 2 old skool 40 GB drives and one SCSI 15K RPM as well... It was definitely a no go situation. Wouldn't even start up with this 500 W PSU. It has 44 amps on the 12 V line, but only around 28 on the 5 V line so I guess that was the issue.

That sounds like more than enough.. I just tried it on a friend's computer running only 2 drives and no go, didn't detect. It looks like it failed, but I'm still going to test this psu out.
 
Well it's not the psu, tested at 12.12 and 5.12 volts each. But now after getting a hardlock in windows, my computer fails to boot :eek:
 
Could be a motherboard-related problem, or the drive itself. Sorry to hear about all your troubles...I know what it feels like... :(

After a lot of testing, if finally found out it was the motherboard. The first one I got was doa and now this one :mad: I'm also going to get a new psu just in case.

Motherboard problem??

I just sent a Raptor 150 back to ZZF for exactly the same thing.

Got it all loaded up and used it for a couple days. Did a reboot and abracadabra....Raptor dissapears. "Boot drive missing, insert disc and hit any key". Try it on every SATA port. About the 5th time I try the Bios finally sees it and tells me that a hard drive failure is imminent and to back up my data. Take it over to my in-laws and try it on their Pentium D Gateway Best Buy special and nada. Take their drive to my computer and wallah, sees it fine boots into bios and there it sits ready to go. I didn't take it any further because it's set up for a proprietary Pentium D system but it reported exactly as it should.

Took a look around here and Anand and Pcper......seems to be something going on. This particular problem and DOA's. My thinking is that these babies need to be VERY carefully shipped. ZZF just shoves them in a really loose styrofoam cradle and drops in some peanuts. I've never had a WD of any kind fail on me until now. They need to secure them much better and ship them as FRAGILE.
 
This thread isn't giving me any warm fuzzies. Expecting a 150 Raptor from ZZF today to be used in a new system build.

Bad enough receiving a X1900XTX OEM card from NewEgg in a anti-static bag, manual and cables all wrapped in bubble wrap and secured with packing tape surrounded by static generating peanuts. I understand OEM but sheesh.

I'm also assuming the drive from ZZF wasn't OEM but retail (boxed and all). I guess I'll find out.

bought some 36 Raptors from ZZF back in the day......., One was DOA , the other lasted a week....I went thru RMA hell...if the 150's were $50.00 from ZZF,I still would not deal with them again...


I hope you get you problem sorted out....
 
I got my Raptor 150 from ZZF as recomended in the sticky The box was smashed almost comrpessed in 1/2. it looked like it was dropped off a 2 story building and landed on one of the corners.

Booted right up and works fine though! Been running it for almsot a month without any issues. Perhaps it was "crushed" by another package rather than dropped....here is the picture.

Lucky bastard heh, I think I'm going to skip ZZF and go straight for the WD advanced replacement. Glad to hear I'm not alone in the disappearing raptors. It didn't work in another mb also.

yea well its gotta go thru alotta drops, bumps, and bangs before it gets to its destination.

if any of you have ever seen a show called "how its made" im pretty sure they did this show on how crap gets from point a to point b via regular mail. and they had a picture of a convayer belt dumping boxes 25 ft. to a truck below. on the other hand the fragile stuff was beein loaded by hand.

electronics all need to be labelled fragile.

of course, iv seen some guy who was making steel boxes for mail. might destroy EVERYONE elses mail in the same truck as yours, but hey, your mail will be perfect.

LOL. I saw a guy who built fucking crate to ship a big ass 15" speaker to someone. He made the crate so beefy he could stand on the fucker (weighed over 300lb's. and he DID stand on it before he shipped it, to prove his point). It arrived SHATTERED...the crate was disintegrated and the speaker had been punctured by the splinters. I could just see the whole thing sailing off of a conveyor belt in my minds-eye right then. 25foot to a horrific smash. great stuff.
 
Raptors seem to be junk. My friend had 2 brand new ones crash in a row.

go read some reviews. the WD raptor is concidered one of, if not THE best drives available. hmm and after that he didnt think why? two drives dont fail for no reason. espicially when you can get warrenties on them. so what was your friend doing?

They both might have been bumped during shipping. And Raptors certainly aren't junk, n00bie. ;)
 
I wouldn't rule out heat as the original culprit. Heat with just 4 standard 7200 RPM drives & only a satisfactory amount of air moving across them can get hot. Throw a raptor in the mix & no matter how beefy the PSU is, an especially hot drive is set for failure. That would explain it working in another computer. After unscrewing it, pulling it out of the case & giving it time to cool while opening another computer to test might allow it to cool enough to work for a while in another computer.

LMAO.....Yeah OK.....Maybe he should look at his system....I have 2 74's that are 3 years old running 24/7...I also have 2 of the 150s that have been running 24/7 for a a month now...But then again, I dont power them with a $49.00 PSU in a $15.00 case.....:)
 
icemochalatte: agreed. Remember, a 10C rise in temperature halves the life of an electronic device (obviously they have a limit, high and low). And I'm pretty sure that way before that limit is reached, the drive will malfunction due to hardware failure. Of course, this is assuming heat is to blame. :eek:
