Random wireless issue

Hello there,

I'm posting here in the hope that people with far more technical prowess than I may happen upon a solution.

I have a wireless card, a 'Tenda Wireless-N300 PCI Adapter'.

Originally I used a wireless dongle to connect to our router downstairs, but the signal was not reliable.

Anyway, the issue is the following: Occasionally, I will notice my connection seems to lag and then stops passing data completely, yet I still appear to be connected to the router (according to Windows).

If I check my ping to the router, when the issue occurs my ping to the router will rise from its usual 1ms-2ms up to thousands of milliseconds, and eventually timing out altogether.

I can remedy this issue by repeatedly running ipconfig /release followed by ipconfig /renew, but it often takes several attempts with those commands before the connection appears to be working properly again.

I want to try and find out why this is happening, as when the card is working fine, my connection is just as I want it (no dropouts, speed capable of downloading at the maximum speed of our internet connection).

In terms of possible interference from other sources, we do not own a microwave and live in the countryside (as in, I don't think it would be 'excessive wireless traffic' or something like that causing the issue, although I could be wrong).

On a side note though, if this issue cannot be resolved and you can recommend me other wireless adaptors (USB or card) that are reliable, that would also be good. A wired connection (and those ethernet through the electrical wiring of the house things are not an option unfortunately). Let me be clear that the speed of the adaptor is not what I'm fussed about as long as it is able receive data from the router at 185KB/s (the maximum speed of our internet connection), I'm more interested in reliability (as I play games online).

I am running Windows 7 Professional x64. I can provide further information if needed.

What other devices do you have connected to the router?

And also, online gaming is notorious for people cheating and attempting to ddos opponents while online. Do you use skype?

No devices are directly connected to the router, but there are a few other computers in the house that connect to it.

The problem is not exclusive to gaming, and I find it extremely dubious that someone would be ddosing me (I'm really not good enough for it to be worth it as it is :p ). I do have Skype but rarely use it.

Also, how would a ddos attack affect my ping to the router itself? And why would my ping to the router be fine if I switch back over to the wireless dongle (which occasionally loses its connection, but it's not the same issue as the one with the card).
 
What is your WAP?

Generally crappy wireless performance is due to either a crappy WAP, crappy card, or both.

When I moved my workplace WAPs from D-Link and Linksys units to Ubiquity UniFi's and HP ProCurves (outdoor) the change was massive.
 
That looks like the problem. For WiFi try to use something that has either wireless-n or 5ghz bandwidth
