Random Start Up Problems

Ok, about 2 weeks ago, my DVD-ROM drive would randomly open, even when it was in use, and then it would close itself a minute or 2 later. And after that it sometimes just doesn't boot up at all. If it doesn't start up, the screen turns black just before the windows login screen, and then just stays black, it always gets to at least this point, unless I get a missing NTLDR. The only way to reboot it is to turn the power off manually. It does work sometime, it can start the first time and then I might not get it running at all.

My motherboard is the Abit IC7-G. Now the fan on my Intel 82875P stopped working, but the temps are still fine. Could the chip had fried one time when I was under a heavy load?

I have also tried booting with one stick of ram, then switching, as well as removing all other components from the motherboard other than one stick of ram and my video card, the result was still the same.

Could it be a virus or some windows problem preventing me from doing that, or some other hardware problem I haven't considered? Hard drive dieing? Its a WD 120 Gig.

Thanks!

the northbridge fan died?? thats not good, you could have fried the nb. replace the fan and hope for the best!!!

Ok, I just worked on it during lunch a bit...and when I tried to boot in safemode, it would hang on the agp440.sys driver. Why all of a sudden do that? Is that a problem related to my video card or my motherboard?

According to MS website it has to do with the motherboard chipset. Does that mean that my northbridge is fried? Or is this a problem with my video card?

My friend has a spare video card that hes letting me barrow, I will try that on my machine to see if it will boot on that or not.

Looking online I've found dozens of solutions....why did this happen? Can anyone please tell me?

Oh, I tried booting using a second hard drive (only OS and important, but older, drivers installed) and I came up with the same error, except the computer reboots instead of hanging.

I've been reading online, if I run chkdsk in windows recovery, should that fix it? Any other suggestions?

Because my DVD drive was giving me problems, could that be it? I've unplugged it though completely...

I think I found the problem...I ended up with the AGP440.SYS error, and so after some trial an error, I found out that my DVD-ROM drive was dead, which was causing the file error, so once I reinstalled windows xp pro, it worked fine. Just thought I'd say I figured out the problem.
