Random shutdowns

Out of the blue, my 3.2 Prescott box has been shutting completely off. Generally it will get in to Windows before it powers off. Running Memtest86 at boot time is subject to the same problem though.

I have swapped out the 3.2 for a 2.4 Northwood, unplugged the harddrives, tested the 450 watt Antec powersupply, switched RAM, taken out my X800Pro all with no consistent success. What is driving me nuts is that there is no consistency. Sometimes it will work fine for a couple of hours, sometimes a few minutes.

The motherboard is the only thing left I haven't swapped, an MSI 865PE, but what could have gone on the board to cause such instability?

check to see if anything in the case is grounded incorrectly. i personally dont know how you would check for it, but having something grounded incorrectly probably would reset your computer. good luck.

Copulated, lol.

If you've tested everything else, and the mobo is all that's left....

I've had a couple crap out on me, and I had the same troubles. Random shutdowns in my experience have been due to 1) bad RAM 2) bad PSU and 3) bad mobo. Hrmm, like Kankykur7 said, check to make sure nothing is grounding out. Take the mobo out and see if there is a screw or something behind it, and make sure the board isn't touching the case.

Tough luck, I guess. It happens to everyone at some point in time.
