I am posting this here because I cannot for the life of me narrow down an issue I'm having with a rig I have in my possession. Basically, I have a system that will shutdown on it's own without warning. Sometimes it will display Vista's shutting down message, other times it will just cut the power.

The first thing I suspected was the power supply - so I tested it with both a multimeter and a glorified power supply tester I had ordered for my emergency repair bag... both showed the power supply was fine (not under load) but I swapped two different power supplies in place (that are from working systems) and the issue still occurs.

I then suspected possible heat issues... but the processor is running cool to the touch (heatsink) and monitors show ~34c/46c idle/load. Reported in Speedfan and CoreTemp.

I've also tried reseating ram and booting with single stick/etc and same thing happens.

So the point I'm at... well, I've no clue as to what is causing the random shutdowns. Any thoughts/suggestions?
 
Without the actual error code it's hard to say, it could very well be software related? Did you try to wipe and re-install windows fresh?

Also what about your GPU temps?
 
No errors / posts just fine. Shutdowns are within Windows and even in bios, sometimes after post, sometimes at Windows login screen...
