random shut downs

Two minutes ago my computer just shut off.

AMD Barton 3200+
A7N8X-E Deluxe
1gb Corsair
6600gt
120gb Maxtor SATA Hdd
Antec 430W PSU, newest component

I'm thinking, and hoping, it's a motherboard issue. I took it completely out maybe 3-4 months ago and since then it's been what I assume to be the cause of all my problems.

I was browsing maybe 2 sites, nothing else on, then it just shut off. However, the green light on my motherboard stays on, but if I push the power button on my case, nothing happens.

I have to unplug the power from the back of the case, wait a few seconds until it drains completely, then plug it in and power it back on. It works afterwards. However, if I get into the bios at all, sometimes when it gets to the XP boot up screen, it will just shut down again. Not every time though. What was weird this time, was that it usually shuts down when booting up, this time I was an hour or two into XP. ????

Maybe off topic, but if I try to reformat, I pop in my XP cd and my SATA drivers on a floppy, and it doesn't detect a mass storage device, so when I push F6 then S to load those drivers, it has a problem with the txtsetup.oem file, and if I ignore it, it goes along then shuts down completely like mentioned above.

motheroard? PSU? Hard drive?

Possibly mobo or psu. I wonder though, check the bios, maybe its shutting down because its detecting temps wrong and its trying to save itself from frying. There are auto shutdown options in case it gets too hot. Turn all those off!!

well disregard that last part of my first post, I did get the floppy to start installing the sata drivers, but about a minute after into the Xp install, it just shut down like above.

Temps in this room are good, the case temp is around 82F, both walls of the case are off, and the CPU's fan is working just fine.

I'll go look through the BIOS for those temp shut off things, and shut them off. who knows.

Probably your psu, happens alot when ocing. Check your voltages, timings ect. to make sure your not asking for to much.

never oc'd, and I just replaced the PSU with the one that originally came with my case, and though it is a lower output, the computer shuts down if I try to install XP or any time after going into the BIOS then going into XP.

I can boot into XP just fine, but if I go into the BIOS at all, then exit and boot up, it'll shut down. Same things goes for when I'm trying to install reformat and install XP. Shuts down when its starting to install the actual XP part of it.

Your temps must be too high. It must be a safety mechanism so it does not overheat. Check your BIOS for temps (even though they're far from accurate). You might want to re-check how good your HSF is making contact with your CPU.

Well, you may be right here, thanks.

I just booted up into the BIOS, and as my computer sits over there with both case walls off, HSF going fine, the BIOS says it's at 56C, probably goes a lot over that once it starts the XP install right?

ah well, time to reapply.

56C is not good. :p Yeah, it just might be time to get a better HSF or a simple re-fitting of the HSF might prove fine.

well now this is weird.

I got home from work, too off the heatsink, thermal paste looked good, but I reapplied anyway.

Boot up, start to install XP, get a bit further this time, then it shuts down again.

I wait like 5 minutes, go back and boot up into the BIOS,.......56C.

Why would the CPU heat up that much then shut down when in BIOS, but a couple days ago I was running Azureus, AIM, and a game (rise of nations) and it never shut down.

Anywho, HSF's just don't stop working, and there's more than enough AS5, Bios is set back to defaults (never oc'd anyway), and all other parts seem to be new, or working just fine.

arrrrgh....if it ain't one thing, it's another....

I apply a better amount of thermal paste, seems to do the trick, but NOW....

"press S" if you have drivers on a floppy for the SATA hard drive.

I do that, it gets through that, and moves on in the XP install.

Gets to the very end, Press Enter to Install XP, Press R to repair, etc

I press enter.

Error: Windows did not detect any hard disk installed on this computer.

It's plugged in correctly, and if I don't boot from the cd or into the BIOS, I can boot into the existing windows xp and be fine.
