Alright, this is going to be a hard one to diagnose, but here goes.

I've got a Compaq Presario 1500 laptop that keeps shutting off, but there is something specific about it's random restarting. It only happens when it'd doing something, IE: Playing Warcraft 3, running Prime95... things like that, or at times even word, but left in Windows it'll do just fine.

OS - Windows XP.

I don't believe it is heat, but I might be wrong, it doesn't seem extremly hot.

Another interesting thing is that Windows doesn't say anything about it when it does restart, no error messages, no "recovered from a serious error". Nothing, not a one.

So... If you need more info lemme know, but this is what I could think of.

THANKS!

i have a similar problem with my desktop.

ive had my XP2500+ oc'ed to 3200+ and up to 2.3GHz for about 2yrs, seems something doesnt like to be at that point anymore. (mobo, processor)
so i set it to stock clock and all is fine now.
and it would only happen if i was doing something that didnt involve regular browsing.

might not help you much but it could be a similar culprit.

I've had 3 instances where this sorta thing happened to me.
1) Harddrive was about to crash.
2) CPU is overheating and computer is shutting it down (usually beeps though)
3) Memory... This one happened to me like 3 weeks ago. I had my memory set too aggressive.. whenever I played a 3d game.. "RESTART"

Having the same problem as well - I'm beginning to lean towards the fact that it might be heat related...

Have you installed any strange software lately? I installed a copy of Netlimiter Beta and kept getting random freezing in games and reboots. I just reinstalled XP and fixed a memory error I was having so I was worried it came back. Turns out the Netlimiter software just sucks and fcks up XP.

Sounds like a memory problem to me. The only info I can think of that you didn't include is whether or not you're OCing your rig.

Here's my suggestion: Run memtest or some other software that'll stress your RAM or return errors if something is wrong. I had that problem for a while and fixing my RAM timings solved the problem. You might want to check your BIOS to see if something got out of place (ie. timings/voltages).

Check it out and let us know what's up. :)

troubleshooting a lappy kinda sucks :p ..anyways - start from the memtest86.. then try stressing the CPU with prime95 or F@H client.

lol awesome, I'm among fellow random restart people... yay.

Ummm... I'ma go test the hell out of this lappy again, but if anyone has any more suggestions people post them up for us to be enlightend
