Random Restarts; PSU going?

Hey all, just looking for some extra eyes on this problem in case I missed anything. System in sig, it's been solid as a rock for the ~2.5 years I've had it. I replaced the PSU about 1.5 years ago with the Seasonic X650 Gold and it's been solid until now. I'm currently getting random restarts at random times for about the last 24 hours. Load, idle, doesn't matter. I get them in Windows or while sitting in the BIOS. I get them at all stock clocks and settings as well. I switched out my surge protector and tried a new wall socket, same problem. Also to note is that the cable modem and monitors, all on the same surge protector, aren't cycling, just the PC is. I shut off the PSU and unplugged it for an hour just to really reset everything, still no difference.

I'm pretty much out of ideas except that the PSU is flaky and going out. I suppose the other thing could be that there's something awry with the mobo but I'm not sure how/what to check for. Anyone have any other ideas/troubleshooting steps/advice? Much appreciated [H]'ers, thanks.

I had the same symptoms with a dying Corsair TX650. I also did the steps you took, resetting the bios, setting everything to default, reseating my cpu, ram, video card, cooler, changing my power strip, changing wall sockets, to no avail. Once I switched it out to a brand new CX600, everything was fixed.

But before you go ahead and get a new power supply, monitor your temps to see if it's a temperature shut down problem.

Other than that, it's most likely your power supply.

You say you replaced the PSU about 1.5 years ago. Did the old one still work and do you still have it?

aka: Swap the thing out and see if things stabilize. Other than that I agree with everything Mezner says, keep an eye on temps, other than that it seems like a PSU. Maybe the motherboard if that isn't the problem but it's always hard telling there. (unlikely but mobo issues are hard to diagnose sometimes)

Thanks for the suggestions. I let it sit for awhile and it hasn't rebooted since (considering it was doing it ever <5 minutes at times, that was remarkable). Temps are always fine, and I retraced my steps and couldn't find anything. I was talking to a neighbor who said they were doing some street work on the lines and I'm wondering if they could have caused enough ripple to trip a safety feature in the PSU but not cause a noticeable brown out otherwise.

Anyway, so far so good, it's been another 24 hours and I haven't had a single reboot, idle, gaming, going to sleep/coming back out so whatever it was may be gone I'll keep an eye on it and report back if anything changes. Thanks!
