Random Restarts, Please Help

Ok heres the scenario:

My computer randomly restarts. The only time it restarts is when my computer is under extreme load. When I have multiple programs open it will sometimes restart, such as Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash, etc. I am a web developer and I have a lot of programs open at once. It most commonly restarts when Im playing a computer game, Counter Strike. So just from that Im thinking maybe my CPU is getting too hot.

I went ahead and checked my temperatures on my CPU and they were getting up to 56 C. Just a minute ago it restarted and it was only at about 53 C. Is that really enough to cause my computer to restart? I know motherboards have a safety feature that restarts your computer if your CPU gets too hot, but is 56-57 C enough? My CPU idles around 47 C.

I know for a fact its not my power supply because I just got a new power supply yesterday. It restarted with my old one, and now its restarting with my new one.

I restarted a minute ago and the speech post reporter told me "System failed memory test". So now Im thinking its my memory. Can memory cause random restarts? I restarted again and it said "System completed power on self test". So nothing was wrong that time.

Here is what my BIOS settings were like:

200MHZ CPU External Frequency
9.0 x CPU multiple
Memory Freq 100%
Timings 6-3-3-2T

Maybe my memory is getting way too hot.

As you can tell Im clueless and I need some professional help. Any help is greatly appreciated.

M computer specs are in my sig.

Thank you very much.

are you running XP? Try disabling automatic restart in system -> advanced -> startup and recovery

instead of restarting, your computer will display a blue screen. copy the stop error.

I don't think ram can overheat, unless you overclock it. Try running a ram test on your computer to see if there is any bad errors.

Thanks a lot for the help, I really appreciate it.

I went ahead and turned the automatic restart off. I think what Im going to do is let the memtest86 run over night.

What do you think about my BIOS settings? Did they look ok? I not a computer expert but I posted on here a while ago and that is what someone recommended. Maybe I have my CPU frequency waaay too high. So what I went ahead and did was reset everything back to default. My CPU is now at 1.47ghz and my CPU frequency is a 133mhz, multiplier at 11x. Maybe that was the problem. I'm going to see if this solves my problem.

Also, what is the average CPU temperature.

Sorry for all of the noob questions. The search is disabled and I dont know how to find the answers to these questions without that.

Thanks a lot.

Do you have a good brand name psu? What kind is it? and what wattage. PSU is my guess if memtest comes up clean.

Look in my signature.

Yes, I have an Antec TRUE550. I got it yesterday. The problem was occuring with my old PSU as well. So I 100% sure its not my PSU.

Anyways, what should a normal CPU temp be?

put it to normal settings, 11x166, it by all means should be running stable at what its SUPPOSED to be.

your temps are on the high side, but are completly in range. if they were almost 70C i'd say it was bad news.

Ok,

I ran the bootable CD memtest86 for about 9 hours over night. I got 0 errors. Then I press "esc" and restart my computer. The post speech reporter says "System failed memory test". I ran a test for 9 hours and got nothing but my motherboard runs a 5 second test and encounters an error? Does this seem common?

I'm almost beginning to think its a software problem. I've never heard of random restarts because of software. This is a just a flat out restart, no errors before or after. Just out of no where, it restarts. Can a software problem cause random restarts?

Anyone else got any suggestions? I'm stuck and completely clueless.

Thanks a ton for your help, I really appreciate it.
