Random resetting problem

My system:

Amd 3200+ 400FSB not oc
Connect 3d Rad 128mb 9800 Pro
512 DDR 333 Ram
Asus A7N8X-x mobo
Maxtor 200gb HDD main drive


After initial PSU problems, I managed to get this PC working like a dream for a week. At that time, I decided to change the fan because my cheap Akasa fan was letting my CPU temp go up to 54c load, and 48 idle.

I bought an Akasa Carnival fan, took out the cpu to clean off the paste and carefully applied the new paste.

After putting it all back together, my bios says I have a new CPU and I had to reconfigure the FSB on the mobo. the rest was done automatically, just like the first time i put it in.

However, I noticed that now, the Hardware Monitor in the bios was showing much higher cpu temps - from 50 - 60. reseated the new HSF, but still the same.

Then I checked this against ASUS Probe and AIDA32. It appears that now, my bios is displaying the DIODE temperature rather that the CPU surface temp. So, I was now getting about 46 idle and 52 load. The diode temp goes from 50 - 60.

This is now when the problems started occurring... when in windows (XP Pro SP1), the PC would restart randomly for no reason. Sometimes, it would restart soon (about 2 or 3 mins) after I had cold booted the PC. What's worse, when it restarted, I could not see the display. I can hear that was booting up as normal, but the screen is mostly black and I can only see silhouttes of the icons on the desktop. Only a hard reset would get the PC back to normal display.

I tried a System Restore, but the problem still occurs. Event logs dont even mention anything about this abrupt reset.

Today, I went into Bios and did a "load Setup Default". Immediatley, CPU tmeperature monitor showed MUCH lower temps. 38 idle and CPU Diode was 48. Asus Probe and AIDA32 confirmed this. Now, I have not used my PC since then, but would that have caused all my reset problems? If so, why? If not, then what is going on? Anyone got the same experience?

Help much appreciated.

Well, tried resetting cmos from mobo - jumper/ remove battery.
Now reading on cpu temp back to 46 idle. Weird!!
 
Check the Vcore it should be at 1.65volts, my friend had a problem like that at a LAN party and I just checked the vcore lowered it to 1.65 and everything was perfect from there :).
 
Well, run out of ideas. It has been randomly restarted twice tonight. Was fine when playing a game, but resetted when browsing net.

As the problem only occurred after I put in the new fan, I have now put old hsf back in. Getting 50c idle now. In Bios, cpu temperature is much higher, but I think that is the diode reading.

Fingers crossed. Wonder if it could be the fan causing the problem..
 
Damn! Randomly rebooted again! I'm gonna have to take it apart and rebuild it again this weekend to see if that solves the problem.
 
Could be the memory for the reason why its restarting randomly. I had the same problem when I first set mine up. I returned the generic memory that I originally got and upgraded to better memory. Problem fixed!
