My wife's rig has recently started acting strangely. She would be gaming and all of a sudden it would restarts and say "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" for no apparent reason. The motherboard won't detect the hard drives even if we press reset. It is only when we shut it down completely and restart do the hard drives show up again and boot normally.

The hard drives and optical drive are connected to the Intel controller and not the Marvell one.

i7 920 w/ Noctua NH-D14
Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5 (Rev. 1 I think)
12GB DDR3-1600
2 x WD5000AAKS
2 x XFX 5850 BE Crossfire
Samsung DVDRW
Corsair TX750W
Windows 7 64-bit

The system has been rock solid since it was built February 2010.
 
Disconnect and reconnect the power cable and SATA cables to rule those out.

[Testing the Hard Drive]
Download the CD image of Hitachi Drive Fitness Test, burn the ISO file to a CD, and then boot from it, just like you would do with the XP/Vista install CD. Test the hard drive and see if any problems are found. DFT will run on most manufacturers' hard drives. Alternatively, you can use Seagate's SeaTools for DOS to test a Seagate or Maxtor drive. For a Western Digital drive, you could use Data Lifeguard Tools for DOS to test a Western Digital drive. For a Samsung drive, you could use Samsung's ES-Tool.

I've done the physical checks of the connectors and I don't think it's the hard drives as the motherboard will not recognize any hard drive or optical drive after it crashes. Only when I power off and then back on will it recognize any them.

No, they are not in RAID.

I've got the latest non-beta motherboard BIOS, newest Cat drivers and CAP and Windows is up to date. It just crashed again.

I may just pick up a SATA PCI Express card and see if that works.

EDIT: Just moved the hard drives over to the Marvell controller. If it's the Intel controller's problem, it will suck. The plan was to pop in an Intel 520 120GB as the Windows drive into the system next week but from my understanding, the Marvell controller is not a good idea for SSDs. :(

EDIT 2: A few hours after switching over to the Marvell controller, my wife noticed the optical drive that was still on the Intel controller was gone. I guess the Intel controller is the culprit. The Marvell controller will now have to do until I decide on a decent SATA PCI Express card.
