i have a small problem. i recently cobbled a pc togetehr out of older parts to have a small HTPC going in the living room. a few week safter it was put together and running fine it starts rebooting by it self , seemingly during internet usage. the only difference i am noticing is a large amoutn of pop ups/ spyware on the pc due to the roomate using it to surf the web and "read email" and by email i mean download porn. :)

so i was wondering if this is symptomatic of any common hardware problems, and how i could test for them. thanks in advance for any ideas guys.

It could be the spyware is causing your system to crash, and auto-reboot is enabled. I would scan with Spybot and Ad-Aware and see what you find.

Check your memory, and the auto-shutdown feature. Also, get rid of all the Spybots and Adware. That should no doubt solve it.
