Random Multiplier Changes?

My Conroe E6400 multiplier, as sensed by CPU-Z, is randomly switching between 6x and 8x, with the effect of changing detected CPU speed between 1600mhz and 2133mhz. If it is going to stay with a consistent multiplier for any length of time, it seems to be 6x. I cannot replicate these results in the ASUS Ai Suite, nor in the ASUS BIOS, both of which show a consistent 8x multiplier and speeds consistently around 2133mhz. Can anyone explain why this might be happening?

I thought at first this might be a consequence of my changing the memory timings and DRAM frequency, since they defaulted to slower than the rated values. But even when I reset those settings, the problem persists.

So, you know, what gives?

im having the same problem with my e6400 and ds3 mobo.
likes to stay at 6x. i disabled EIST in the bios (which is supposedly the option controlling
the multiplier to save power/ect/ect) but it still switches b/w 6x and 8x.

im wondering what is going on too.

Isn't that the processor just clocking down to save power when not in use?

Intel Speedstep?

It could just be a glitch with CPUZ.

I disabled SpeedStep the first time i turned the machine on, but I'm guessing it is exactly that: some kind of autoclock feature. Dont like it though, and wish you could turn it off.

Why do people complain about Speedstep? Its a feature that you dont even notice its there. When you arnt needing alot from the CPU it downclocks the multi so you save power, heat output. When you need the CPU power it automatically clocks back up, you dont even notice the transition when it changes. Dont see why its such a big deal.

just like I mentioned in the other thread, keep speedstep off and disable C1E under Cpu Features as this fixed it for me under msi 975x.
