Random lockups with 8800GTX -- heat problem?

Hi,

I just bought and installed a new EVGA 8800GTX. It's working great, except occasionally my screen will go black and reboot itself in the middle of Half Life 2 and Half Life 2 Lost Coast. I felt the grill of the video card at the back and it was very hot, and when I booted back up I ran nTune and it said the card was at 82c.

Is this a common thing to happen -- 8800GTX's overheating to the point where it reboots randomly? I also got a BSOD last night, but didn't catch what for.

I am running Windows XP SP2 and am using the 163.71 drivers.

Any input is appreciated.

Could be a few things.

1) Memory issue. Most BSOD's come from memory dump crashes. This includes the memory on the card itself.

2) Underpowered PSU (A very common issue).
 
I had a discussion with my roommate about my problem -- he mentioned a memory problem as well. I may have to RMA this card to Newegg.

My power supply is a Corsair 520HX. I'm only running a 8800GTX and two hard drives, so I should be OK.

If anyone has any other input, that would be great.
 
I get similar lock-ups running my HF engine in Counter-strike and TF2.
I haven't been able to figure it out yet.

I am running an 8800gtx with the latest drivers on a P5W DH Deluxe. My power supply is an Antec TP3-650 only running the card, 3 hard drives and 3 disk drivers along with the system. I don't see how it wouldn't be more than enough.
 
82C on 8800GTX is not uncommon. You shouldn't RMA the video just based on one game. Run a couple more games and see.

My 8800 Ultra is 72C idle and over 80C under load.

Common reasons for screen went black on then reboot are:

1. system unstable: issue with CPU and RAM over clocking, not video RAM OC. If you see artifacts on the screen then it's video VRAM OC problem. Otherwise, it is the CPU-MoBo-RAM stable issue. Some RAM just cannot run at its spec clock speed.

2. Power supply problem: not necessary that you don't have effect watts. Could be the way you hook up the cable such that one cable is using too much power - video card and hard drive on the same power cable, or if your MoBo has a axillary power input for video card and you didn't hook it up (usually is for SLI).
 
I started having the nuisance restarts during any application after installing the latest nvidia drivers (v. 163.71).

I will dig up an older driver package tonight and install that one and see if that fixes the problem. I have an old 7900GS running on a Corsair 620, and everything was fine until that latest driver install.
 
installed an older driver package, and no nuisance restarts so far, but I did freeze up in HL2:2...so that's progress in my mind!

edit: negative. No progress. Windows still freezes up at random points. Will have to try the power supply next.
