For some reason my internet connection keeps crashing after 5-8 hours of use. ill be downloading something overnight, and when i wake up, all my downloads are at 0.0k/sec and my internet connection is dead. it seems to have only started recently when i started using bit torrent. i would give specs to my computer, but im not at it and its free and new. i know its a p4 1.6 with 256 megs of sdram, and 1 120 gig 1 160 gig and 1 20 gig hard drive. im using 3.0mbps dsl, and i have a dlink 4 port switch managing my dsl. any suggestions would be nice

edit: if processor specs, mobo specs and the such are needed, ill get them when i get home. Computer was given to me by my friends work, not bad for a free find
 
theres no hibernate or sleep setting on right now. only thing is turn off monitor after 20 minutes.
 
Does this happen with the DSL plugged directly into the PC? I had an old SMC router that just couldn't handle all the connections that bittorrent would open, and it would randomly lock up (the router) like you are describing. I replaced it with a new one and everything works fine now.
 
no dsl is run through the switch. this could be the problem if its locking up. is there any way to fix this so this doesnt happen, or am i stuck with just having to upgrade

edit: i believe i have 1 week leases setup, but i end up restarting the switch and modem almost every day to every other day because of this problem
 
Some times torrents may drop down to 0K for a few minutes. Is it possible that DSL is disconnecting because if inactivity during that time? Maybe setting up an email program to check your email once every minute could solve that problem.

I would still run your computer once overnight directly connected to the DSL just to take the switch out of the equation all together.

Do you have other computers hooked up to the switch that are trying to get internet access? That would be a problem too.
 
xbox and 2 machines that arn't on at night are connected. ill trying bypassing the switch and see if that fixes the problem. i dont think my dsl should be disconnecting because whenever ive been connected to aim it normally keeps my connection alive. and my dsl is not set to time out or drop after a certain time
 
Adjust your preferences in your download client, especially emule. Relax it a little or your internet WILL stall. You might be downloading to much at the same time(to much in queue).
