Am I the only one on this forum that hasn't had any luck with ramsinks? I've put them on 3 of my videocards so far and not eeked a single playable mhz out of them yet. I've installed them on a Nvidia GF3, an Abit Ti4200 OTES, and now my BB ATI 9600 Pro. If you ask me I've either had really bad luck or ramsinks are more BLING than anything else. By the way. For those of you wondering I use Arctic Alumina thermal epoxy to secure them to the RAM and follow the instructions to the 'T'. Anyone else out there experiencing the same?

Lots have people have said this. My theory is that any increase in heat transfer capability by the heatsink is negated by the thermal resistance of the heatsink itself, since the heatload is so small. I'd say they're more for looks than anything.

if put on a videocard with superglue and a dab of AS5, they will effectively transfer heat off of the ram chips as well as the PCB, which cools the core off a little it, and unless you have some big heatsinks with lots of airflow across them, your not going to see much of an increase.

For the 100th time, RAMsinks are useless without good airflow to supplement. :)

ramsinks dont do anything execpt look cool  that is unless you have a nice fan blowing directly over them

Ewwww you seem a little passionate there. I'd bet if you just left off the ramsinks, and blew a nice fan across the memory chips you'd get the same result. I'm telling you they don't seem to do a bit of good, but companies that sell them and claim that they perform miracles are laughing all the way to the bank. Ever see any of the manufacturers that make ramsinks put any scientific data together that supports their claims. Me either.................

hehe, you're really pushing it... if ramsinks hardly do anything to cool the memory chips themselves, then they do much less to cool the PCB and even far less for the GPU - like absolutely nothing.

I got an additional 10mhz overclock on the ram on my 9500pro by installing tweakmonster ramsinks using AS3 epoxy.

I didn't even lap the ram or the heatsinks, and I still got 10mhz Overclock, aditional.

I say they work. worth the $50 plus money for shipping and the epoxy? not really considering you can get a 9700 pro for about $220.

imho, ramsinks help in a certain situation only. For example, on my radeon 9700 pro, before I installed my zalman cooler on it, the max memory clock was 330mhz without artifacts, which is 20mhz below the 2.8ns chip's rated speed. Now when I installed the zalman, which cooled the core so much that no heat was bleeding onto the ram, the clocks went up to 350mhz error free by wizzards program, which is the EXACT rated speed of the chip as off samsungs website. Now I'm willing to bet that if i installed ramsinks before I installed the zalman and when my max memory clocks were 330mhz that they would have helped. But if i am also willing to bet (and i will find out when i go watercooling) that if i put ramsinks on the chips now, nothing will be gained, since I am at my memory's max frequency ceiling.

$50 + seeems high to get 10 mhz on ram if that's the case. What did the 10 mhz do for your real time gaming experience? I'd personally rather take the $50 and buy a new mouse, or maybe a Ratzpad and a nice steak dinner :D

I agree that the $50 I spent was probably not worth it. However, my card looks real cool through the side window, and I don't have a 6 foot pole up my ass.

HAHAH!

you guys kill me

$50?!

I just got 8 Tweakmonster BGA's and some Arctic Silver Alumina Adhesive for $36 shipped from PHAM Computer.

Egad man...why so much money? 'Tis a worthless thing to buy ramsinks - I would pay maybe $5-10 max for a set...but THIRTY-SIX? I could two 80GB harddrives for $40.

2 80gb hard drives for 40 bucks? those drives are probably equally as bad a value as the ramsinks in question..

and big deal you got them 14 bucks cheaper than Me nearly 6 months later...

Sometimes, I may spend a few dollars more buying from a trusted retailer rather than take the risks involved with buying from an unknown to save a few bucks.

Before this post dies a terrible death, can I have an Amen on ramsinks don't do shit?

Ramsinks do wonders. Like said before without proper airflow they're virtualy useless. I have stock factory ramsinks and I got only a 5mhz increase without airflow, now i can get over 50mhz with a 80mm fan blowing 32cfm on them. The highest I got them was 578mhz, thats 75mhz higher than stock.

My belief is you could blow a tornado across ram and it wouldn't make a difference, but that's just my opinion.

So you've only proved that airflow helps heatsinks work better. How about bare RAM chips? Don't they benefit from increased airflow?

I'll bet you get just as much if any gain from a bare memory chip with air blown across. My ram chips get lukewarm but never really hot. Even during marathon BF 1942 matches. Nothing but bling.

As you can see from my sig, I'm pretty much set on everything else. I figured that it can't hurt and especially because I have fans pointed right at my video card.

Does this mean that only 373 of your posts have been intellegent? ;)

Ya know. This is one article that HardOCP should take up. Testing on a few different cards whether or not ramsinks will net any gain in 4 different patterns. Bare, Bare w/fan blowing on them, Ramsink, and Ramsink w/ fan.

I think it'd be a winner :)
