I currently have 2x4gb sticks of DDR3 Ram. Is it okay to get an additional 2x4gb ram kit (same manufacturer and specs and timings) as my current one, or do i need to get a single 16gb kit? Not sure if that would cause problems.

Most likely you will be fine. If you are currently overclocking your memory controller you may need to dial that back a little. Although that would be the same if you got a 16GB kit with 4 x 4GB dimms.
